About the Author
Dr. Oliver Boyd-Barrett joined Bowling Green State University's School of Communication Studies as Director in 2005, a position he held for three years before deciding to return to faculty in the Department of Journalism. His current research interests include international and national news agencies, news media and the “war on terror,” and Hollywood representations of the intelligence community. He was previously Professor of Communication at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California, and has held various appointments at universities in the United Kingdom. Dr. Boyd-Barrett has published extensively on educational and management communications, international news media, and the political economy of mass communication. He is founding chair of the division for Global Communication and Social Change in the International Communication Association.

Programming And Problem Solving Review

I like that book. This book is more theoretical. Every chapter has a case study which will help to understand the chapter. There is one deficiency in this book that it will not tell us line by line code details as compared to other books which is needed for a new programmer. This edition also give header file details in the end.

About the Author
David began teaching anatomy as an instructor of kinesiology at Miami's Educating Hands School of Massage from 1999-2003. David developed a fun, informal and informative style of teaching. David brought his unique style and ability to make anatomical concepts simple, to the yoga world in 2008, with the creation of the YogAnatomy DVD series. He is well known for delivering the complex and sometimes difficult topic of anatomy in a way that is very accessible and understandable to yoga practitioners. He emphasizes that fully understanding anatomy within a yoga practice ultimately comes from doing the practice and having the experience of your anatomy.

So many Aha! Moments... Wish I could give it 20 stars

David Keil is funny. Anatomy is a dry subject, as you probably know, and he manages to make it interesting and funny. I don't know how he does that.

I am a fan of David, so let's disclose that early, and just so you know I've watched all his DVDs as well. He has a bunch, some on anatomy and one on adjustments.

I don't know him personally, however, I just know him via the web and I am glad I do.

The book is not only thoroughly researched and slanted, yes, towards yoga practitioners, but it is ALSO challenging...

For example:

He has one part (and I paraphrase) where he questions the reader point blank:

"What is it I hear you say? You say you tried to do the beautiful hand-stand for 8 years and still nothing? Really? Don't you think maybe it might be time to change your "approach"?

And I laugh. Because he is right. I HAVE tried for 8 years and I it IS time to change approach, and I never read this book.

Well, in my defense, it was not published yet. Now it is. Lucky me. I tried hand-stand today and I was amazed and how FAR a little understanding can go.

I won't get into too many details but I will tell you two things about the book: one is what I learned, and two is a suggestion

ONE: WHAT I LEARNED

a) The book re-introduced yoga practice for me.

For example, in a basic pose, like standing, just standing (toes touching heels slightly apart), if I simply lift my toes, that awakens the muscles around the lower part of my leg (tibia), which in turn informs how my quadriceps and hamstrings are aligned, and my pelvis, and how I stand, how I walk, how I move, the position of the spine, how I think and how I even live...

Forgive my words as I am not as learned and eloquent as David is, you should read the book

b) I FINALLY understand triangle pose. Finally GET WHY it is that the alignment has to go the way it goes... I used to just repeat what I was told, now I get it. So when I am on the mat, my body takes on a whole different meaning.

And that happened not just with triangle but WITH A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER poses, which I now understand so much better.

The yoga mat is my playground now.

a) The book made me love my body - Because I can now understand how AMAZING it is.

I mean, just to notice for example, that the hips hold two thirds of the weight of my body, and that the tissue and ligaments that hold the hip together to the hip are so strong you could not pull it, even with 3 people, because it won't break, gives me a whole new level of respect.

TWO. A SUGGESTION:

DO buy his DVDs on anatomy.

And no, I do NOT get a commission.

The reason why is because as I watch the DVD and then read the book I get MORE CLEAR on all the details, everything comes alive when I look at both. It's like having a yoga teacher showing you things in three dimensions.

Especially if you are a teacher, give yourself this gift because you will teach a completely different, much more informed class after reading him and watching him.

OK, I can't help it, here is A THIRD THING

He has a section at the end of the book where he integrates all the anatomy lessons into the asanas. That is gold. For anyone who practices. The first chapter may be boring (although necessary for teachers) but the last section is a gift for anyone interested in yoga.

WARNING! This book is NOT meant for everyone! (A review written with tongue firmly in cheek)

This book is not for everyone. In fact if the following is true for you, then I'd steer clear of David Keil's book on Anatomy:

1. You never use a small word when a diminutive one will do ... then David's very practical and easy-to-understand way of explaining anatomy will probably insult your (inflated) sense of intellect. Best to leave for the mere commoners.

2. You don't practice yoga. Because then all that practical information David includes, like how the body works in yoga postures like forward bends, hip openers, twists, arm balances and backbends - well, those would be just wasted pages full of useless information.

3. You like to sleep - what other books on anatomy do: put people to sleep. Instead, you'll end up awake, trying to feel the tendons of your hamstrings move behind the knee ... or on all fours, playing with the way your scapula sticks up or rather, shouldn't.

4. You live in a world of absolutes and just love a good ol' lecture from the pulpit damning the other side - then David's inclusion of various body types as well as his exceptions and adaptations - will only end up confusing your clear sense of right and wrong.

5. You have no sense of humor.

6. You either prefer dense paragraphs or love coloring books. David writes this book conversationally using illustrations of himself in various positions revealing the anatomical patterns, muscles, and bone structure - but already in full color so no crayons necessary.

7. You think anatomy is all there is to yoga. David's a bit of a trickster even in person, that way. You go in wanting to talk pelvis and spine and instead, end up waist deep in breathing, self study, and meditation.

Now, if none of these things apply to you and you STILL don't have this book - what are you waiting for? Because this is the best damn book on anatomy and yoga I have read. Get it.

Roger Koenker is McKinley Professor of Economics and Professor of Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 1976 to 1983 he was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories. He has held visiting positions at The University of Pennsylvania, Charles University, Prague, Nuffield College, Oxford, University College London and Australian National University. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society.

new views for modern data

Modern data are plentiful and, as always, complicated. Yet the demand for interpretations and explanations are ever more urgent. There's a pressure to do more in less time.

Quantile regression is based upon a reinterpretation of the least squares method, providing a flexible means of doing data analysis. Rather than seeing a dataset as a "signal contaminated with noise", it suggests all the effects recorded there are worthy of study, if only to understand processes which interfere with primary measurements.

In cases of complicated observations and datasets, it promises to serve as a powerful tool.

Prior to purchase, I recommend Koenker, Hallock, J.Econ.Perspectives 15(4), 143-156, Fall 2001, and especially Cade, Noon, Frontiers Ecol. Environ 2003, 1(8), 412-420 as previews.

I look forward to indulging myself with the text.

Difficult to read

I am focusing on applied econometrics, and this book involes too many theories. However, that's not the problem. The problem for me is that the explanations and examples are not clear enough. It looks like the author assume the readers have a very good background of relavent literature.

Great book - But severe typos in the Kindle edition at least.

This book is an important reference on quantile regressions. It gives an overview that papers will not easily give you. However, detailed proofs are usually only available in the published papers.

However, I bought the Kindle edition of the book, and there are numerous severe copyediting/typographic problems in the book. For instance, section 4.6.1 has an important sentence that never finishes. Somewhere else in the book the maths get jammed. I have not checked the print edition of the book, but these are severe problems that should have been eliminated with copyediting.

Otherwise, this book is crucial for anybody doing quantile regression analysis.

meant for communications engineers

Warning! This is a very technical book, that is directed at the communications engineer who wants a detailed explanation of VoIP. It describes the numerous VoIP standards, but in a much more meaningful way than the official standards documents.

H.323, SIP and MGCP are each given a chapter. These are the most prominent of the VoIP standards, and deserve your attention. The chapters explain the standards to enough depth to convey the main functionalities. Plus, you are now equipped with enough knowledge to actually read the standards documents if you so desire.

If you are wondering about H.248 and SS7, then be aware that the authors have deliberately refrained from covering these here. For various reasons - SS7 being seen as too far afield from VoIP.

Good text -- but missing important features

This is a well-written text; it compiles a lot of good information on important issues. I enjoy reading it, because there is a lot of info on things I don't understand. For example, it has an introductory description of how faxing works, then touches on how T.38 works with that approach.

There's also some information on what you'll usually see in equipment, and about movements afoot that aren't quite widespread as yet -- e.g., ENUM lookups for routing calls.

The author sprinkles in his opinions and technical/aesthetic tastes, however. While it's very informative, some sections read like opinion from a magazine like MacWorld. For example, the authors praise H.323 for its greatness, but criticize SIP for being as a bunch of vendor hacks.

But it's missing some key features -- like a useful index (it has one of those sparse six-page indexes for a 380-page book), or even a bibliography! The lack of a bibliography is particularly offensive. For example, the authors claim that "95% of VoIP minutes worldwide" are controlled with H.323, but provides no basis for that claim.

When do I get the sequel?

This book itself is pretty good. It is comprehensive in its distillation of the RFC's so I don't have to read them. My one complaint about the content of this book is my perception of their bias against SIP, although they still do a good job of fleshing it out. However, it is a little annoying that it seems like every other page, just when it starts to get good, they will refer you to the companion book. So my advice is, yeah, go ahead and purchase this book, but you might as well go ahead and buy the other one too.
