Needs some updates and a little ego heavy, but otherwise a fantastic resource

This is a great book but I do wish there were more species-specific pictures of parasite ova (eggs). Some of the parasite eggs are quite ambiguous although this just might be an issue with the state-of-the-field. I do wish there were more and updated treatment suggestions for some of the parasites. Some, like coccidia, are generally treated with 1-2 treatments of newer coccidiacidal meds like Baycox rather than extended courses like albon. There is a bit of ego inherent in Roger's writing that I also found a little obvious and that caught me off-guard.

Good Book!

This book was perfect for me. I recently discovered issues with parasites in my reptiles. After purchasing this book my understanding of parasites and the treatment of these creatures grew incredibly. The recommended drugs table is one of the best features inside. Not only will this book help you identify parasites in but it list primary and even some secondary medications to use. Explanations of how these medications work and their dosages are given as well. This is a good book for anyone wanting to learn more about treating parasites in reptiles. The only thing that is missing is the life cycles of the parasites mentioned. However some parasite life cycles aren't completely understood be science.

EXCELLENT!!!

The book has many colorful, detailed, relevant, and described photos, tables, and texts of the different internal and external parasites, their consequential pathology, and appropriate drugs with doses. It is a must for any reptile veterinarian and a good way for clients to "double check" their exotic vet. It would be helpful to any herp owner in understanding but probably not for curing any parasitic problems because most parasites require treatment with prescribed medication.

Themes from Celine's Journey...

I have been fairly impressed with this Landmarks of World Literature series. I have only read two books in the series so far but they have both been quite good. In this book Sturrock attempts to place Celine's Journey to the End of the Night in historical context, he gives some biographical details relating to Celine's life, he elucidates the major themes of the novel, and he analyzes the style. Sturrock is quite successful in all of those tasks. Sturrock attempts to determine how much of Bardamu's vision of the world was also shared by Celine by comparing passages in Journey to the End of the Night to passages in other Celine works including his Ph.D. dissertation (a biography of Ignaz-Philip Semmelweis). Since this is the only book I have read of Celine's so far I found the comparisons quite helpful.

Some of the themes of Journey to the End of the Night are obvious. Some are not quite as obvious. For example, Sturrock highlights the theme of the journey. The journey seems to have two functions. First, the fact that Bardamu travels the world is what allows him to claim universality for his insights into human nature. If Bardamu had remained in France for the whole novel the universality of his insights would have been lost. The journey allows us to see that humans are the same everywhere. Second, it allows Celine to highlight one of his fundamental truths about human nature: we are never satisfied being where we are. We need to be continually moving. We are constantly trying to escape our condition, our bodily nature, and the fact of our mortality, but escape is ultimately impossible. The theme of the journey is a theme that I missed when reading the novel but Sturrock does a good job analyzing it.

Sturrock also highlights the theme of the imagination. That is another theme I missed and it made it very difficult for me to understand the passage in the novel where Bardamu perceives the dead flying through the sky. It seemed to me to be the only scene in the book where Bardamu engages in such a fantastic vision. The scene was so puzzling, and seemingly out of place, that as soon as I got this book I tried to find Sturrock's discussion of the scene to see what he made of it. He connects it to the theme of the imagination. Without going into too much detail, basically Bardamu believes we can temporarily escape our situation through the imagination (hence his love of the movies). That is also the function of the writer. I was also a bit mystified about what Robinson was supposed to represent in the novel and Sturrock does a good job analyzing Robinson's role. Overall, Sturrock did an excellent job analyzing the themes of the novel. He deepened my understanding of some of the themes I had already recognized on my own, and he opened my eyes to some themes I had missed.

I would definitely recommend this work to any fan of Celine's book.

Excellent--But Necessary?

Sturrock is a very good translator, witness his versions of Stendhal's BRULARD and Hugo's NOTRE DAME DE PARIS. so he's more than qualified to write a critical commentary on VOYAGE.

My question is: why write one? I think the existing biographies of Vitoux and McCarthy provide all the background a serious reader needs to make sense of Celine's ouevre, including VOYAGE. It's one of those books that "interprets" itself.

I don't want to say Sturrock's book is superfluous, but a reader of VOYAGE would do better to read Celine's next novel, MORT A CREDIT, and one of the aforementioned biographies to understand why Dr. Destouches was attempting.

To me Claudi Alsina and Roger Nelsen deserve their own place in the Book of mathematical expositors. Time and again, book after book, they have given us reminders of why we became mathematicians. What is a charming proof? Alsina (Polytechnic Univ. of Catalonia, Spain) and Nelsen (Lewis and Clark College) cite D. Schattschneider ("Beauty and Truth in Mathematics") in Mathematics and the Aesthetic, edited by N. Sinclair, D. Pimm, and W. Higginson (CH, Jul'07, 44-6282): such a proof should exhibit elegance, ingenuity, and insight, and it should provide connections and paradigms. A charming proof should be eligible for inclusion in Erdos's mythical "book," which contains the most perfect proofs possible of all mathematical results. M. Aigner and G. Ziegler's Proofs from the Book (4th ed., 2010) contains a sampling of such proofs, and the book under review, even though there is some overlap, provides more. The overall flavor here is more geometric and visual, and less analytic, than Aigner and Ziegler's work. Each chapter provides challenge exercises with solutions. A brief listing of section topics includes triangulation of convex polygons, the Erdos-Mordell inequality, an angle-trisecting cone, the quadratrix of Hippias, and the Wallis product. Not surprisingly, the charm of the contents means that in sum this is a charming book. It would be a good supplement to introduction-to-proof courses, as well as topics for discussions in mathematics clubs. Summing Up: Highly recommended. This is a collection of remarkable proofs, all using elementary mathematical or geometrical arguments, and all very simple but often extraordinarily powerful. While some will be well known, I imagine that almost every reader will find material here that they have not encountered before.

Although the book is a mathematics book, I feel sure that some of the theorems would have direct relevance to statistics. For example, how about: for any even number of different points distributed inside a circle it is always possible to draw a line across the circle missing every point and such that exactly half lie on each side of the line. Surely this can find application in segmentation analysis, for applications in marketing and other areas.

In addition to the proofs themselves, there are over 130 "challenges" aimed at stimulating the reader to create similar such "charming proofs." Solutions to these challenges appear at the end of the book.

Given my joyful experiences of exploring challenging problems in middle school and in high school I have a soft spot for elegant problems that are accessible to motivated students who don't have any background in advanced mathematics. And, I have a soft spot for MAA books because they were among the first math books I devoured, specifically their MAA contest prep books. What I particularly enjoy about Charming Proofs is its mix of excellent writing, great illustrations, and interesting yet accessible problems. To be honest, this is the case with every MAA problem-solving book I can think of. I may be biased but I suspect that many would agree with my overall assessment of MAA books of this type. Here are some interesting challenges from the book: Prove that the vertex angles of any star pentagon sum to 180 degrees. Is it possible to construct an equilateral lattice triangle? Does a version of Pick's Theorem hold for three-dimensional lattice polyhedra? Prove that Heron's formula and the Pythagorean theorem are equivalent. Is it true that three times the sum of three squares is always a sum of four squares? Prover there are infinitely many dissection proofs of the Pythagorean theorem. Charming Proofs is one of those great books that you can pick up, choose a chapter that strikes your fancy, work through the chapter, then be rewarded with a number of challenging problems to explore. I should warn you that the book is biased towards geometric and visual problems rather than analytical ones. This makes sense given that visual problems lend themselves better to charming (visual) solutions. I'd like to address the concern that some people have with the price of MAA books. This book, for example, lists for nearly $60 USD. This is certainly more expensive than any popular math book written for the general public. From that perspective the book is indeed expensive. But, if you consider the other extreme, math text books that can retail for $100 or more, Charming Proofs is inexpensive. Whether the book is expensive or not, I believe, depends on how you're going to use the book. If you're going to use the book as a text and teach yourself the material, and Charming Proofs is of textbook quality, then you're looking at a $60 textbook. If you're looking for a more casual involvement with a book then you can see if your library can get you a copy. Many libraries have partnerships with libraries throughout the country and can get you many books that they don't hold. In this particular case, Amazon.com sells the book for as little as $21.99 (new) from their partners so the cost is not prohibitive. About the Author
Claudi Alsina received his BA and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Barcelona. His postdoctoral studies were at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. As Professor of Mathematics at the Technical University of Catalonia, Claudi has delivered a wide range of research papers, publications and lectures on mathematics and mathematics education. His latest books include Associative Functions (co-authored with M. J. Frank and B. Schweizer, WSP, 2006) and Math Made Visual (co-authored with Roger B. Nelsen, MAA, 2006). Roger B. Nelsen received his BA in Mathematics from DePauw University and his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1969. He taught mathematics and statistics at Lewis and Clark College for forty years before his retirement in 2009. His previous books include Proofs Without Words (MAA, 1993) and An Introduction to Copulas (Springer, 1999).

Excellent book

This is an enjoyable, challenging, and well-written book! It complements my study of pure math and introduces me to many fields of math. The answers are in the back of the book to the challenges, but I would recommend not looking until you finish!

sexy and full of suspense!

I have been dying to read this book!
From the first page you are thrown right back into Cain and Evan's story. It's a very powerful story and intense journey.

We find that Cain and Evan are certainly feeling the effects of what has happened. It has really taken a toll on them both.

Evan is broken. She feels lost in the world and is lacking the control that she needs. She has lost her spark and dominance that she needs to get through a world without Cain.
Cain is certainly not much better than Evan. His life has been turned upside down. With so many murders taking place, his mind is crowded with unanswered question and feelings of total confusion. but his priority will always be Evan. He is determined to win her back, but little does he know, it won't be that easy.

Evan needs Cain to win back her trust and loyalty and that's not something a simple apology will fix. No, he must earn it and that means handing all control over to her.

This story features some of the hottest scenes that I've read. Seriously, these two are just too hot for words at times.
It also answers questions from book one by going a little deeper into the past. We learn more about Lucy, Nicole and Caleb. Evan and Cain aren't left out, there are still several secrets to uncover.

I knew the moment I started that I would be on the edge of my seat. That certainly happened and my emotions were all over the place.
Lilly Black likes to keep you guessing. There's always something lurking in the shadows trying to take away Evan and Cain's happiness. You just never know when or what's going to happen.

I am so ready for book 3. My brain is going crazy here!

I highly recommend this book! Lilly Black is an amazing author! Don't pass this book up!!!

Loved the book, hated the cliffhanger!

This is not your every day BDSM novel! Cain is not your typical Dom who likes to tie up and whip his submissive. Well, he actually does love to do that, but here's where he's different. He's also a submissive to his Domina, Evan. I love that aspect of the novel.

In the first book, Evan had some issues in a sexual nature and thought she was ruined for life. Until she met Cain.

I won't go into too much detail because it would ruin the book, but I will tell you that there's an ongoing murder mystery, TONS of hot, dirty sex scenes, and one hell of a cliffhanger! ARGH! Why must you do this to me, Lilly?

Omg i was waiting for this book for so long and let me tell you that it didn't disappointed me. The story between Cain and Evan continue.
I loved every word of it, every chapter that i finished i wanted more, i couldn't put it down..
Lilly your words hit the proper places.
This book is so full of mystery, suspense, drama and hot as hell.
It made me see that we can find a light in the end of the tunnel until....
I'm anxious for the next book, because i have so many questions that need to be answer.
Please Lilly Black hurry up because i want more, i need more.
