HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I waited almost two years for this book to come out. That said, it was worth the wait! Killing Bin Laden: Operation Neptune Spear 2011 is well written with only a few minor discrepancies. The assault team was made up of "best-of-the-best" from the various Red Squadron troops. The book is well supplemented by great artwork, numerous pictures, timelines, maps, and diagrams of the raid. A bonus, for me, is the inclusion of the Operation Neptune Spear - Task Organization chart, the most detailed I've seen, and the three Tactical Mission Timelines covering the raid. I was also impressed by the author's candor when he admitted that there were differing stories surrounding actual events and he included these in the book. (No, they aren't the various tales spun by the Obama White House.) The book also contains a disclaimer, which is the first I've really noticed in an Osprey book: "DISCLAIMER. No classified or confidential information was accessed or used in composing this account. All details of this account are a compilation of open source documentation, participant accounts, declassified and/or publicly released information, and - where necessary - hypothesis of the most valid and evident premise." Perhaps what I love most about this book is that it packs a lot of information in only 80 pages. This book would make a great addition to anyone's book collection that has followed the events of the past 13 years since 9/11.

As with many military actions in the current era, the news media did a halfway job of reporting the information and got a lot wrong. This book gives an overview of the hunt for Bin Laden and the raid on his last hideout. A lot of the material is still classified and the author drew a lot of the reasearch from "Zero Dark Thirty" but fills in missing information and corrects some misconceptions. The raid to kill Bin Laden was a high-risk mission that involved going into a sovereign nation that is ostensibly a US ally and assaulting a fortified compound and getting the US military personnel out safely again. Even though there were "hitches" in the plan this raid will go down in history as a fine example of using special operations forces. In the initial reports about Operation Neptune Spear one didn't appreciate the depth of the US military deployment to make the raid happen and to respond if the raiders ran into trouble. Hundreds of troops and dozens of planes, many of whom didn't know why they were being moved to quick reaction locations, plus the CIAs local personnel and hired operatives. Even with all that support the raid still depended on a few young Americans risking their lives in a foreign country. No Americans were lost and the raid was over faster than a midwestern thunderstorm. The book is easy to read and well illustrated. Recommended highly.

Thank god for those who know how to get the job done right. We do not need to know all the details. That information is for those that need to know. This book details the skills of "those people who need to know" & the professional execution of those skills.

I have been enamored of Beyond the Fringe ever since, as a preteen, my parents got the record. My sister and I would laugh uproariously regardless of how many times we heard them. (Perhaps it might explain something to know our favorite magazine was Mad Mag). Anyway it is now a joy to have it printed out. I do miss Peter Cook's "The Great Train Robbery" (No loss of train), though

Satire begins and peaks

Beyond the Fringe was a theatrical revue that was first performed in London in 1961 but went on to play Broadway etc.
The contributers and performers were Alan Bennett, Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller and Dudley Moore. For those unfamiliar with the names they were respectively a brilliant English writer (Bennett), English comic writer and probably one of the funniest men who ever lived (Cook), Doctor, Opera director and many other things (Miller), musician and Actor (Moore). This book contains the complete scripts for that famous review. In fact there were a number of different versions, but the scripts here contain virtually everything from the shows.

Forty six years later and a lot of this material is still brilliantly funny. Take the opening sketch 'Steppes in the right direction'. After an introduction where Dudley Moore plays the National Anthem on a Piano, it turns out Dudley's character is not British but from Russia. The others then try to teach him about the British way of life. After failing initially they resort to extreme tastics by blowing a raspberry when Khrushchev's (the then Soviet Premier) name is mentioned and saying mmmn when Macmillan's name is mentioned. By the end though the whole the cast is saying Macmillan and blowing a raspberry everytime. Remember at the time of the show Harold Macmillan was the Prime Minister and nobody had ever mocked the Prime Minister in public.

Also included in the book is the sheet music to the musical pieces Dudley Moore wrote for the show including his brilliant piece 'And the same to you'. This is the theme to Col Bogey played in a variety of classical Piano styles. Wonderfully funny if you ever saw film of him playing it, as he can't end the piece. Its a sort of spoof Beethoven ending with Dudley starting to panic...

Sadly Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are no longer with us, but this book is a fine way to remind yourself of the great contribution to British comedy that these four made.

i bought this book primarily for the music contained therein...
the skits were funny, albeit somewhat dated
the music was wonderful...BUT, the notation was so cramped as to make it difficult to work with & the book could not be made to lie flat without breaking the spine...
still, good stuff

In their 2000 book, Millennials Rising, Neil Howe and William Straus argued that children born after 1982 will grow up to become America's next Greatest Generation—filled with a sense of optimism and civic duty—but according to San Diego State psychology professor Twenge, such predictions are wishful thinking. Lumping together Gen-X and Y under the moniker "GenMe," Twenge argues that those born after 1970 are more self-centered, more disrespectful of authority and more depressed than ever before. When the United States started the war in Iraq, she points out, military enlistments went down, not up. (Born in 1971, Twenge herself is at the edge of the Me Generation.) Her book is livened with analysis of films, magazines and TV shows, and with anecdotal stories from her life and others'. The real basis of her argument, however, lies in her 14 years of research comparing the results of personality tests given to boomers when they were under 30 and those given to GenMe-ers today. Though Twenge's opinionated asides may occasionally set Gen-X and -Yers' teeth on edge, many of her findings are fascinating. And her call to "ditch the self-esteem movement" in favor of education programs that encourage empathy and real accomplishment could spare some Me-ers from the depression that often occurs when they hit the realities of today's increasingly competitive workplace. A new book tackles the 18-to-35-year-old generation's problems--those they face and those they create.Twenge's book is comprehensive and scholarly, filled with statistics and thoughtful observations about the group she's dubbed Generation Me. These young people were raised with the idea of self-esteem being more important than achievement, which has caused them to place the self above all else. Such beliefs also have created a generation of young people who believe every dream is attainable but who aren't prepared to deal with discovering it isn't so. Twenge notes that today's young parents are especially lenient with their children and reluctant to discipline them, suggesting that perhaps the next generation will be even worse off. Twenge believes Generation Me would benefit from a heavy dose of realism. Accessible and a must-read for the generation they address. Kristine Huntley

A confused and confusing polemic

First, the high points. The author has a lot of interesting survey data that she uses compare the attitudes of "baby boomers" and "generation me".

She shows how today's youth are much more accepting of other races, cultures and sexual orientations; how people are open about their feelings; how women no longer face the kind of discrimination that they did 30 years ago; how young people want to do fulfilling things with their lives and are more self-reliant than ever.

And of course we see the downside: narcissism due to what can only be described as too much self-esteem; an unwillingness to take personal responsibility; too much of a focus on money and celebrity; and an epidemic of depression that no one has yet found a cause for.

The contrast between the generations is very interesting - dating someone outside your race is no longer an issue; the average woman in 2005 has a more aggressive personality (as measured by her survey) than the average man did in 1968. All cool stuff, and it would have been great if the author could have distilled the most significant of these differences into a single chapter.

Unfortunately, she didn't, and I found this to be a very frustrating read overall. She discusses the mismatch between the ambitions of young people and the careers they ultimately end up in. She is right to question kids who want to be "made" into famous hip-hop stars or models or actors, but she also sneers at all of the kids who want to be doctors, lawyers, dentists, etc.

She devotes pages - if not chapters - to the idea that "work should suck" and that young people should not expect to find their dream jobs, let alone fulfilling employment - but then when she discusses what young people can do to be more realistic, she lauds two 25-year-olds who quit their jobs and biked across the US to raise money for charity.

To make matters worse, she chides young people for being cynical about the government, and then chides them for not being cynical enough about their jobs. To top it all off, she thens admits that, as a professor, she "[doesn't] know much about nonacademic career paths".

One thing she does know - and she repeats it numerous times in the book - is that not just anyone out there can become a college professor like her. In many ways, this book feels like the author's attempt to get back at people who made fun of her and wronged her when she was growing up. Even though she's 33 years old and some of the subjects she talks to are 12, she often calls this "her generation" and makes generalizations about it based on her experience. She writes: "Publish the damn honor roll...[I]t's [a] small bit of high school glory enjoyed by the kids who will someday be our doctors and lawyers." Though of course she cautions against encouraging even the smartest and most capable students lest they become convinced that they don't need to work hard to accomplish their goals.

Ultimately, she ends up blaming the victims. Today's 15-to-25-year-olds don't run the world, their parents do. For all her talk about personal responsibility, she devotes exactly one sentence to telling parents that they bear some of the blame for how their kids have turned out.

The author had the opportunity to write something substantial about the changes that have happened over the last two generations. Instead, she decided to write a polemic against people who are not just like her. This will certainly appeal to anyone who likes to believe that "these damn kids are so disrespectful these days", but an insightful book, it's not.

Generation self-centered and unstructured

Initially I was excited by this book. As an anthropologist, the many differences between generations are a subject that never fails to fascinate. Unfortunately, while the author tosses out great statistics indicating fair research, she couches it all in an `I, me, my, mine' framework. This focuses the book not so much on a generation that may differ from those who came before but on the author herself, her education, her college years, and her friends. The overall impression is an unstructured book justifying why they themselves are having trouble with the joys and trials of living life.
If the reader is looking for another whining confused confessional please continue. If you are looking for a book that may lend insight in to why the under 30 crowd do what they do then I would recommend that you read elsewhere.

Interesting, but could have been better

I'd describe this book as an interesting yet flawed work- it raises some interesting questions, but often fails to follow through with incisive analysis.

Any book that attempts to describe "a generation" is going to raise objections of over-generalization and, therefore, anyone who writes such a book really should start by explaining just why, exactly, this is a useful characterization. At a minimum, there are problems of periodization, inclusiveness, and timeliness.

Some generations have been shaped by world-historical events (e.g., WWII, Cold War, Great Depression) but, since that does not seem to be the case here, then why define a generation as beginning in 1973 instead of 1982, or 1989? And, although the author beats pretty hard on the diversity drum, her observations often seem entirely centered on her own white, liberal, upper-middle-class self. Perhaps that's inevitable, but, if her "generation" generalities do not include those who are non-white, non-liberal, or non-middle-class then she should explicitly say so.

The primary thesis of this book seems to be that a sort of extreme individualism is characteristic of her "Generation Me." One problem with this is that it may be too soon to say- after all, a similar survey of young adults in 1928 might have reached similar conclusions, yet a survey of the same people in 1948 might well have discovered a greater accommodation to collective action and personal sacrifice. Also, she seems to define "generations" largely on the basis of a shared common popular culture without any apparent awareness that conformity to an omnipresent, highly commercialized popular culture just might be antithetical to a more authentic individuality.

The book seemed particularly weak in discussing family and marriage. There seems to be a good deal of evidence that, on average, married people are healthier, wealthier, and happier than otherwise-similar singles- and that the reason for this is that the relative permanence and security of marriage promote a commingling of assets and labor specialization- a co-dependence, if you will- that is seldom found among non-married co-habiting couples. Yet, duty and obligation- even if mutual, and voluntarily assumed- surely restrict one's absolute freedom! And so, this book would have been far stronger had the author explored the trade-offs between the freedom to do whatever, whenever against the the freedom to voluntarily bind oneself to durable commitments of duty and obligation to others.

In all, I wouldn't characterize this as a bad book- just an unfinished one. It does raise important questions.

Alexis Sanchez has an amazing life story. He is a rags to riches story. The most important thing is that the money has not changed him. The "Daily Mail" reported on his background when he signed a contract with Arsenal. His story is a made for Hollywood movie: "Sanchez grew up in Tocopilla, rural Chile, and earned money from the age of six. His father abandoned him as a toddler and his mother worked several jobs to take care of the family. Alexis, who is 25, now earns £130,000-a-week! Sanchez used to perform acrobatics and box in the street for money. He was nicknamed 'El Nino Marvailla', or 'the Wonder Kid', due to his talents. He donated £140,000 to replace five football pitches near Tocopilla last year. " This book will help people to understand that you must never give up hope. If we try hard enough, we can achieve our dreams. I recommend this story for all people to read.

Inspirational, enriching, and a FEEL GOOD read for all ages!

Alexis Sanchez: The Beautiful Game, was gifted to me, and albeit my first read by Thomas Jerome Baker, it will not be my last.
Even though basketball is my favorite sport, Baker skillfully peaked my interest in football /soccer with his unique writing about not only the sport, but about an amazing and dedicated player. In unique style, Baker enlightens readers about this unconventional and inspirational player, Alexis Sanchez. In today's world of high paid, arrogant players in all realms of sports, it was refreshing to read about a man who did not let success go to his head or change his life in a negative way. I know the majority of players are nowhere near as humble as Baker depicts Sanchez to be.

Without this being a biography, Baker relates a poignant tale of unprivileged beginnings and a young man determined to rise above it all, with such finesse you feel you personally know Sanchez. What an insightful, beautiful story that should be read by millions of young people to encourage them to never stop following their dreams, but to know dreams only come to fruition if you do the required work and keep a positive attitude.

Alexis Sanchez: The Beautiful Game: Poetry In Motion, is a fast read that keeps one entertained and richer in spirit for having read it. I enjoyed this more than I ever thought I would (thanks for those shirtless photos, Mr. Baker!), and it touched me so deeply, I strongly believe it should be placed in schools. We can't all be the best athlete, but we can all improve aspects of our lives that will evolve us into better human beings.

Thomas Jerome Baker did a great job of turning me into a fan of his writing, of a sport that previously held little interest to me, and of Alexis Sanchez - who is a dynamic role model that teaches us to dream big, stay determined, and make your passion work for you. I am thankful to have received this gift and believe this story is relevant and important, especially in today's society.

Poetry In Motion

Football is just not my game. It holds no interest for me. 22 players running up and down a big field for 90 minutes only to finish with a score of 1-0 does not even begin to hold my interest. Since I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my fair and honest review, I decided to read the book anyway. When I read it, I admit I was bored at first. It read like Alexis Sanchez had paid the author to rave about his playing ability! But then I saw the first video where Sanchez does with his feet what a magician does with his hands to mislead the goalkeeper. I slowed that bit right down to see exactly how he did it. I can see now why the author describes Sanchez as poetry in motion. His goal was amazing, and from that point on I was hooked. I wanted to know more about Alexis Sánchez. Why did Manchester City pull out of the bidding for him? They must surely be aware that they missed out signing an excellent player. And then there is the fantastic goal he scored for Barcelona against Real Madrid. The commentary by Ray Hudson is priceless: Quote - "He’s off running like he’s got a lobster down his shorts, but then he puts the ceramic brakes on...and then, takes the gravity of the moon and the planets into consideration"... Even though I still don't like football, the game is just too boring for me, I have become a fan of Alexis Sanchez. 5 stars for Alexis Sanchez.

About the Author

ANSEL C. UGURAL, Ph.D., is Research Professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has held various faculty and administrative positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and he taught at the University of Wisconsin. Ugural has considerable industrial experience in both full-time and consulting capacities. A member of several professional societies, he is the author of the books Mechanics of Materials, Stresses in Plates and Shells, and Mechanical Design: An Integrated Approach.

 

SAUL K. FENSTER, Ph.D., is Professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he served as a president for over two decades. In addition to experience in industry, he has held varied positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University and taught at the City University of New York. Fenster, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society for Engineering Education, is co-author of a text on mechanics.

Preface to the Fourth EditionIntroduction

This text is a development of classroom notes prepared in connection with advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in elasticity and the mechanics of solids. It is designed to satisfy the requirements of courses subsequent to an elementary treatment of the strength of materials. In addition to its applicability to aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering and to engineering mechanics curricula, the authors have endeavored to make the text useful to practicing engineers. Emphasis is given to numerical techniques (which lend themselves to computerization) in the solution of problems resisting analytical treatment. The stress placed on numerical solutions is not intended to deny the value of classical analysis, which is given a rather full treatment. It instead attempts to fill what the authors believe to be a void in the world of textbooks.

An effort has been made to present a balance between the theory necessary to gain insight into the mechanics, but which can often offer no more than crude approximations to real problems because of simplifications related to geometry and conditions of loading, and numerical solutions, which are so useful in presenting stress analysis in a more realistic setting. The authors have thus attempted to emphasize those aspects of theory and application that prepare a student for more advanced study or for professional practice in design and analysis.

The theory of elasticity plays three important roles in the text: It provides exact solutions where the configurations of loading and boundary are relatively simple; it provides a check on the limitations of the mechanics of materials approach; and it serves as the basis of approximate solutions employing numerical analysis.

To make the text as clear as possible, attention is given to the presentation of the fundamentals of the mechanics of materials. The physical significance of the solutions and practical applications are given emphasis. The authors have made a special effort to illustrate important principles and applications with numerical examples. Consistent with announced national policy, problems are included in the text in which the physical quantities are expressed in the International System of Units (SI). All important quantities are defined in both SI and U.S. Customary System of units. A sign convention, consistent with vector mechanics, is employed throughout for loads, internal forces, and stresses. This convention conforms to that used in most classical strength of materials and elasticity texts, as well as to that most often employed in the numerical analysis of complex structures.Text Arrangement

Because of the extensive subdivision into a variety of topics and the employment of alternative methods of analysis, the text should provide flexibility in the choice of assignments to cover courses of varying length and content. Most chapters are substantially self-contained. Hence, the order of presentation can be smoothly altered to meet an instructor's preference. It is suggested, however, that Chapters 1 and 2, which address the analysis of basic concepts, should be studied first. The emphasis placed on the treatment of two-dimensional problems in elasticity (Chapter 3) may differ according to the scope of the course.

This fourth edition of Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity seeks to preserve the objectives and emphases of the previous editions. Every effort has been made to provide a more complete and current text through the inclusion of new material dealing with the fundamental principles of stress analysis: failure criteria; fracture mechanics; compound cylinders; numerical methods; energy and variational methods; buckling of stepped columns; and common shell types. The entire text has been reexamined and many improvements have been made throughout by a process of elimination and rearrangement. Some sections have been expanded to improve on previous expositions.

The references, provided as an aid to the student who wishes to pursue further certain aspects of a subject, have been updated and identified at the end of the text. I have resisted the temptation to increase the material covered except where absolutely necessary. However, it was considered desirable to add a number of illustrative examples and a large number of problems important in engineering practice and design. Most changes in subject-matter coverage were prompted by the suggestions of faculty familiar with earlier editions.

As before, it is hoped that I have maintained clarity of presentation, simplicity as the subject permits, unpretentious depth, an effort to encourage intuitive understanding, and a shunning of the irrelevant. In this context, as throughout, emphasis is placed on the use of fundamentals in order to build student understanding and an ability to solve the more complex problems.Supplement

The book is accompanied by a Solutions Manual available to instructors. It features complete solutions to all problems in the text. Answers to selected problems are given at the end of the book.

One of the worst textbooks I have used

I'm a student in mechanical engineering, and I recently took a class called Advanced Mechanics of Materials. Unfortunately, this book was the required textbook for the course. I know that a lot of text books can be considered "bad", but this is by far the worst textbook I have ever used.

Ideally a textbook will explain concepts well and give relevant examples to reinforce the concepts. The textbook does neither. This textbook explains concepts extremely poorly which makes it bad enough. On top of that, moreover, this book does not give examples for 90% of the concepts.

If this book is the required text for a course, I would recommend changing classes. If you're looking for a book on advanced mechanics of materials, this is NOT a good book to consider. I would have given this book zero stars if that had been an option.

Not a great book on its own.

I found myself reviewing the details of other books checked out from the library (Timoshenko 1956, Seely and Smith 1952, Boresi 2003, and Hibbeler 2003) often hidden in this text just to do the exercise. Furthermore, a lot of examples were the same as those from other textbooks but with much less clarity here. The diagrams were often confusing and the details showing the development of the theory were often highly masked or left out completely. On a positive note (if there is actually one), the book will probably be used later for reference, because, after struggling through the minute details and solving the problems posed here, I have a better understanding of the principles, but definitely NOT because of this book or the professor who used it almost exclusively to teach the course!

About the Author

Karen Holtzblatt is a co-founder of InContext Enterprises, Inc., a firm that works with companies, coaching teams to design products, product strategies, and information systems from customer data. Karen Holtzblatt developed the Contextual Inquiry field data gathering technique that forms the core of Contextual Design and is now taught and used world-wide.

Practitioner's guide to contextual design - now with more agile / scrum

Karen's process is something that actually works, unlike many psudo-ethnographic customer engagement strategies.

By maintaining a connection to the customer data from the beginning to the end, it uniquely empowers you with a defensible design rationale. Something few other approaches can say.

A true roadmap for playing nicely with agile development is also something you won't find in most other customer research methodologies, especially contextual ones.

Whether or not you are willing to live the process and follow the steps outlined is another matter. Your mileage may vary, especially if you decided to line item veto particular aspects.

Good book for the beginners

If you are a professional on this are, the book doesn't give you much new information. It tells lots about different methods that are already written in the other books as well. For a new people in this area, the book is very good introduction to the (rapid) contextual design.
I liked the way the book was written. It was easy and understandable to read.

Useful to quickly get up to speed on practical execution of a contextual design approach

How-to guides are not typically very entertaining and this is no exception. Pretty much does what it says on the cover. Practical summary of running a Contextual Design approach from start to end for different timings and contexts. Some parts are really just rehashes from other books which I did not find interesting but it's probably necessary for completeness. More diagrams and illustrations would have made this a quicker read and some of the references to development methods are a tad dated.
