Grips You From the First Page...

This being my 6th Rona Jaffe book, I again have nothing but praise for her work. This book sucks you in, right from the first page of the prolouge. The book starts at the end, in December of 1975, and at the funeral of one of four friends. Who's funeral is it?...while you may think you have it figured out throughout the book, you'll be very surpised at the ending.

This is the story of four friends...Margot - Local news anchor, and very depressed and cynical woman who has one night stands to try and find happiness...Nikki - Bored with her husband constantly trying to make her decisions for her, and putting down all that she finds pleasure in, she leaves the country for an apartment in the city, and learns life's not so easy on your own...Ellen - Married to 'Good 'Ol Hank', has numerous affairs to try and fill the void of a loveless marriage to a man she barely even likes, while her children become strangers to her...and Rachel - A beautiful young women married to a very wealthy man who adores her and she him, gets tired of being a social butterfly and decides to go back to school and do something with her life, meanwhile, unbeknownst to her, an increasingly dangerous man has a unhealthy obsession with her, and has taken to following and spying on her, all the while nearing his breaking point.

In the end, I loved this book. It was so hard to put down, and you never knew which way the story was going to take you. I can't wait to read my next Rona Jaffe book...I know I won't be disappointed!

Another Winner

I am addicted to Jaffe's books. This one followed in the same vein as her other novels in that it delves into the lives of four well-educated women in the throws of their mid-life disappointments. When Jaffe wrote this, she was dealing with the 1970s and was questioning 1950's values which had defined her and her female contemporaries. Beautiful, frustrated, and sexually curious, these four women are breaking with old values and leaving comfortable, if not satisfying, traditional marriages, a prevalent event in that era.

Though dated and defined by that revolutionary decade, the book is still a joy to read.

Very compelling Book

"The last Chance" was the first Jaffe novel that I discovered and it`s still my favorite(on place #2 I would put "Class Reunion").
"The last Chance" is about a group of women living in NYC and having all kinds of (thrilling) experiences with love, their jobs, their children etcetera.
A very unpredictable ending. Definitely a novel worth 5 stars rating.
I know only one other author whom I would give 5 stars, and that is Nancy Thayer.

    Scattered and Conflicting

    This edition really does not have many changes from the revised edition so not worth the extra money. However the book itself is easy to read but the information through out the book conflicts itself and is a bit scattered. Our teacher throws out questions on tests because the book can't give a clear concise answer so it's not worth testing on.

    Anne Burns holds professorial positions at Aston University, Birmingham, and the University of New South Wales, Sydney.     Thoughtful, informative perspective on teaching spoken English to second language learners

    Second language learners often find it more difficult to learn spoken English than to learn written English. This book offers a framework for teaching spoken English to help teachers identify and address the difficulties of teaching spoken English to second language learners.

    The authors contend that teaching spoken English involves more than just having English language learners engage in English speaking activities. More specifically, they contend that teaching spoken English needs to be systematic, and based on the perspective that speaking is a communication skill that requires a holistic approach that takes into account three important factors: the teacher, the language learners, and the teaching materials.

    The book consists of 12 chapters organized in 4 parts:

    In Part I, the authors: (1) describe the cognitive, social, and affective aspects of speaking; (2) identify the cognitive demands of speaking that English language learners face and the cognitive skills that they must develop to learn spoken English; and (3) discuss what constitutes second language speaking competence, and its implications for teaching spoken English.

    In Part II, the authors: (1) identify the similarities and differences between spoken and written language, and explain why teachers need to help English language learners to understand and deal with the differences between spoken and written English; and (2) discuss the significant differences among various types and kinds of spoken discourse and how they are affected by the contexts and situations in which they appear.

    In Part III, the authors: (1) offer a methodological framework for teaching speaking to English language learners; (2) suggest and recommend how teachers can better teach spoken English through various activities, and how they can develop lessons that are focused on teaching speaking; and (3) suggest and recommend how teachers can plan and develop a course for teaching spoken English.

    In Part IV, the authors suggest and recommend classroom practices and procedures for teachers to use to: (1) develop and implement speaking tasks for English language learners; (2) enhance speaking performance by English language learners; (3) help English language learners develop and apply metacognitive awareness to enhance their learning of spoken English; and (4) assess the speaking performance of English language learners.

    The book is fairly technical in its approach, and probably would be difficult to follow and understand without some prior training or experience with teaching English to second language learners. However, I recommend this book to teachers and instructors who are looking for ways to enhance and improve their teaching of spoken English to second language learners.

    Its a sad story of a boy who becomes an orphan not Batman, I wish. Still just as good. He gets taken in by some old drunk who uses him for his own gain. Then just goes down the same road the old drunk did. The ending is satisfying.

    When the Legends Die follows the story of Thomas Black Bull, a Native American from the Ute society, and his struggle to keep his roots within another's society.
    After his parents' untimely deaths, adapts to sufficing for himself in the wilderness. He becomes one with Nature, meeting a family of bears in the area, and renames himself "Bear's Brother" because he feels a closeness to one of the bears in the family. Eventually he is taken to the white man's world and put through a school, but finds school tiresome and boring. After trying to return to his place, he is once again found and brought back. Consequently, he begins to live in a world that he does not want to adopt, and forms a bitterness that carries into his adulthood.
    At the very core of this novel is the effort to return to one's origin. Tom Black Bull takes on several names (Bear's Brother, Devil Tom Black), and this signifies his lack of identity. He ultimately finds his identity only through the trials of controlling people and an abusive world. He takes his anger out when he becomes a bronco rider, attempting to abolish his memories with rebellious riding and attitude toward people.
    This book has a simple narrative, but the message is certainly deeper than it looks. The euphoric revelation for the individual is finding out who he is and what is significant in life's journey. This is what Tom must discover through the many setbacks. Although the book can be a bit tedious and repetitive, it has a beneficial message to those who read it.

    Self-surveys for determining your motivation style.

    Would you like to determine your own motivation / leadership style? Are you task-oriented or people-oriented? Although I have not used the entire book, Chapter 12 of this book presents several self-assessment surveys based on McGregor's Theory-X / Theory-Y, McClelland's Achievement-Power-Affiliation, and Herzberg's Motivators-Hygienics models. Chapter 10 has a self-assessment survey based on Likert's System (Authoritarian-Benevolent Authoritarian-Consultative-Participative). Very useful.

    About the Author
    CLEVELAND SALMON is an architect and maintains a private practice in Antioch, Tennessee. In private practice he specializes in affordable, energy-efficient design, with completed works in Jamaica, St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands), and North America. Mr. Salmon studied architecture at the University of Technology (formerly the College of Arts, Science, and Technology) in Kingston, Jamaica, and at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

    Another, much better, BooK:

    COURTYARDS: Aesthetic, Social, and Thermal Delight; by John Reynolds, published November 2001.
    Courtyards contains a huge amount of valuable information for building in hot humid and hot dry climates. Not only a "pretty picture book," Courtyards takes the reader through width to depth ratios; height and width proportions; comfort zone enhancement through thermal mass, ventilation, and shading; and much more. In fact, although Courtyards is similarly priced as the book above, I thought it contained 10 times as much valuable information - real information that I could put to immediate use for my projects in the Yucatan. Color and B&W photos and line drawings illustrate the many considerations for hot weather design, yet the book is not overly technical. Nor is it over-simplified, which is the main problem with Tropical Regions.
    Tropical Regions remains the only book I've had to return to Amazon - even a year later - with dozens and dozens of books ordered.
    GOOD books about tropical housing design are very hard to come by and I'd like to point searchers in the right direction. Since architecture books in general are usually so expensive, finding a useful selection is very important.
    Also, I have to echo the writer below. Richard Hyde's book CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN...for Hot Humid Climates is also very helpful. I felt it was a little more technical and not as colorful as COURTYARDS. Either would be a good place to start your research for tropical housing construction.

    Scanty Information, despite the Book Description's claims

    I have to agree with Rainer Mebus. This book is going to be returned. It is not suited for architects or anyone with even basic concepts of building siting and construction. A hodge-podge of photographs, gathered from various places, do nothing to illustrate examples of the textual concepts. As far as being an "indispensible source," statements such as (p102) "A hat or cool shade is often useful when exposed to sun... as the sun can be very bright when the sky is clear and the sunlight is intense." or (p103) "Vegetation is luxuriant where rainfall is high." & (p105) "The effects of earthquakes are mainly economic, although poorly constructed buildings can result in loss of life." are hardly indispensible and belong more in an elementary school than a volume that claims to be "essential reading for architects and other building professionals."
    Mebus is correct that all of the data here contained is readily found in other, better and cheaper books. I was hoping that the longer and first review was more correct, but was sadly disappointed that newer concepts, techniques and materials were not discussed in a book printed in 1999. Further, all the information contained can be found in basic architectural concepts courses or books and is only slightly tailored to fit the idea of "tropical construction." The author borrows diagrams and descriptions from many other texts.

    Tropical Architecture in a Nut Shell

    Cleveland Salmon has thought of everything! When dealing with tropical architecture, there is a lot to think about. Salmon energetically lists almost every possible condition found in the built tropics from desert dryness to humid jungle conditions. This book serves the tropical architect like a shopping list or as a reminder of what conditions must not be overlooked when planning to build in the tropics, wherever that may be.
    My only negative comment would be that the chapters are way too brief. Nevertheless, this book is worth its weight in gold for all the topics and subtopics it includes. Once seeing this compendium as an overview, anyone can deepen an interest or concern with other sources. This book on tropical architecture, however, is where you want to start.
