About the Author

Dr. Neil Todreas is professor emeritus at MIT. He has extensive nuclear power experience, having led an industry review group on the Three Mile Island situation from 1983-1988 and served on the NRC's Reactor Safety Research Committee. In addition to his part-time teaching and research, Dr. Todreas continues to be a leading consultant to industry and government. He is a Fellow at the ASME and a member of the national academy of engineering.

Dr. Mujid Kazimi is a professor and former head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering at MIT. He also has extensive nuclear power experience, having served on the Board of Managers of the Idaho National Energy Laboratory. He is also a Fellow at the American Nuclear Society and the AAAS, and a member of the AIChE, ASME and ASEE. Dr. Kazimi has been involved with several nuclear safety studies throughout his career, covering reactor systems, as well as their fuel cycles.

The aim of this extensively revised and updated book is to survey, in a short volume, the essential parts of cloud and precipitation physics. The early chapters review atmospheric thermodynamics, providing a background for understanding the nucleation of water drops and ice crystals, their growth, and the development of precipitation. Topics from the second edition that are central to cloud physics, such as severe storms, have been expanded. The book introduces subjects of current interest, including cloud modeling, radar cloud studies, and mesoscale meteorology, and contains a new chapter on observed prioperties of clouds. Problems are included as examples and to supplement the text, and the book is illustrated fully throughout.

Good introductory book on cloud physics

There are very few stand-alone cloud physics text books on the market. More often than not only a chapter is devoted to clouds in a general atmospheric sciences text book, which grossly neglects the complexity of the subject. Fortunately this one does provide a terrific introduction for students/researchers in atmospheric sciences/physics/engineering who want to learn more about clouds. Basic concepts are presented in a consice but often mathy way. Sometimes the empirical equations can throw the readers off a bit. Unfortunately these catches are almost inevitable in cloud physics.
A great merit of this book is its size. A well-designed undergraduate course can definitely go through most of the topics. At the same time there is enough detailed information that the interested instructors and students can develop term projects or simple models using the book as a reference. In all I highly recommend this text as an introduction to cloud physics. Advanced researchers in the field, however, will need a more extensive reference, such as Pruppacher and Klett.

Good Textbook

This book provides a nice introduction to the physics involved with clouds. It is fairly heavy on the math in some chapters and more descriptive in others. It also provides mathematical and descriptive definitions for many common meteorology terms. The problems at the end of the chapters are challenging. The example problems in the text are too few and too simple to allow the concepts to be easily applied in the problems at the end of the chapters, however, all of the neccesary information is present. Overall the book is very helpful.

Best introductory text on cloud physics

As an engineer trying to come up to speed on cloud physics, this book was absolutely essential. It covers essentials such as the thermodynamics of dry air, water vapor and its thermodynamic effects, parcel buoyancy and atmospheric stability, mixing and convection, observed properties of clouds, formation of cloud droplets, droplet growth by condensation, initiation of rain in nonfreezing clouds, formation and growth of ice crystals, rain and snow, weather radar, precipitation processes, severe storms and hail, weather modification, and numerical weather models.
This is the best introductory text one can buy.

The first book you MUST read if you are going cruising.

The reason I rate this a "first read" if you are seriously considering cruising is because so many people with limited or no experience living on a boat undoubtably have many misconceptions about life aboard. This kind of lifestyle is harder and more demanding than the sit-at-the-dockside- weekender could imagine. Tom Neale's description of the sober realities of cruising life are enough to talk the faint of heart or the misdirected out of it before they make a big mistake. As the book progresses, Tom's contagious enthusiasm becomes more and more apparent. He writes in an easy style with wry humor. His advice is well thought out, accurate and should be considered "Cruising 101." Don't forget to take notes as you read.

Great Book for Contractors and Owners Alike

I've relied on this book as a construction consultant for over 10 years, using it to help others resolve difficult construction disputes. I've also recommended it to owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and attorneys. Although it is written primarily to help contractors organize, assemble, document and present information to allow them to be paid for changes to construction projects I have found it equally helpful when owners use the techniques described in the book to analyze change orders and claims. Pinnell describes methods and processes that are fair to all parties and often result in reasonable settlements to knotty construction problems without resorting to the courtroom. My only disappointment is that I didn't write the book myself. Congratulation, Steve, on a nice piece of work. If everyone would follow the recommendations contained in the book us construction consultants would not have much work.
