I have never thought that drawing and sketching human figures especially girls could be this simple until I found this book. This is a must have book for beginners who are looking for step-by-step guide on how to sketch the perfect human figures. The pictures that are included on this book was also extremely helpful for me. I also like the fact that the author kept the description of each step so simple and very easy to follow so even if you have very limited experience with drawing you can still found the book helpful. I strongly recommend to anyone especially beginners!

This has been a frustration to many women. Now it makes everything easier and thanks to this book. To some women its hard to draw or sketch beautiful girls especially some specific part of the body like for example the eyes, lips and some other difficult part.

I like this book

As a hobby artist, I like this book. It gives all the basic information you need in order to improve your drawing technique and emphasizes the importance of using the right tools for the job. The pencil drawing techniques will be especially useful to me next time I sit down to sketch. I liked the fact that it showed how to sketch different positions: standing up sitting down etc. I would have liked it to be a little more detailed, but all in all this is a good guide for beginners.

THE PENITENT

When Gerald Williams called and asked me to meet him at the El Station at 48th and Market at three in the morning, I didn't give it much thought. I'm a city newspaper reporter and I'm used to getting calls in the middle of the night. I don't sleep well, anyway. The meeting was in the heart of what they call a rough area, but I'd grown up in one equally rough. You had your share of people who helped you and you had your share of assholes. What neighborhood doesn't?

They also said it was where people went to score drugs big-time. I'd had what people call a "substance abuse" problem and, truth be told, the neighborhood in which I was meeting Gerald wasn't either the best or the cheapest place to score. "They" really should check their facts.

But, if I met Gerald, I'd find out what had happened to Donna Kate.

Donna Kate Williams had reigned as the lead dancer for years with New York's Alvin Ailey Dance Company. She'd taken over from the legendary Judith Jamison and given Black teens -- male and female -- another role model. When she wasn't touring the world with the company, she was speaking before civic associations, classes in high schools, everywhere, providing the message that people should pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles. After Donna Kate retired, she'd come back to Philly, her hometown, and founded her own modem dance studio. She wanted to teach the next generation of dance stars and preach the gospel of getting what you wanted.

This woman who had achieved her own dream and earned everyone's acclaim for doing so, had recently disappeared from public view, amid a huge scandal involving the death of her protégé. She'd been lambasted by the press, the girl's parents, and the community that had so worshiped her. For several months, she had refused to talk to anybody.

Now her husband, who had gone into seclusion with her, had resurfaced. He said Donna Kate wanted to talk to me, and warned me not to tell anyone about the meeting.

I didn't tell anyone where I was going. That didn't mean I didn't leave some word in my tiny apartment, in case I didn't return. I had to make sure people could trust me -- up to the point where I could trust them.

I met Gerald at the El stop. The last time I'd seen him had been at some ritzy charity ball, this Black man poured into a tuxedo, looking really fine. But now he looked haggard; some of the polish was off. He didn't take the hand I offered.

"Thanks for coming," he said, his voice still wonderfully deep. He looked around, watchfully. "If you'll get inside, we'll be on our way." He waved toward the dark car almost hidden in the shadows of the El Station. I got inside. He didn't even open the car door for me. He waited till I'd fastened my seat belt and drove off. I gave him a minute, then started asking questions, but he told me I should wait and talk to Donna Kate.

Had Donna Kate pushed her protégé -- Lisa was her name -- too hard? That was the question everyone was asking. It had been rumored that Lisa had started to slip in her performances before she'd died . Had she started taking

drugs? Did Donna Kate know something about it? Donna Kate had never gone in for drugs herself (not that anyone knew), but she was part of that artistic world. They did whatever it took to sustain their artistic reigns. It wouldn't be the first time a star had tried to manipulate a protégé.

I had my information from the press reports and the investigating I'd done on my own. But I also had Beverly, the twelve-year-old I'd adopted as a Little Sister. Having helped to raise my own four younger brothers and sisters, I couldn't seem to get away from raising somebody. Beverly's foster parents had enrolled her in Donna Kate's Dance Studio to help curb some of her anger. Beverly had loved it. Every time she and I had gotten together, she couldn't wait to tell me about all the new steps she'd learned and how excited everyone was for Lisa. If Lisa made it, they could, too. After Lisa's death, with the resulting publicity over unanswered questions, the Studio had shut down. Beverly became very quiet.

Lisa had jumped off the top of the Donna Kate Dance Studio. Why such a violent statement? The rumors were everywhere; but the police couldn't prove anything and they had to let it go. They had more pressing cases, with more promising leads.

Lisa's parents were inconsolable. Their grief had turned to anger. They told any reporter who would listen (and I'd been one of them) that famous people were always using children. You thought they cared, that they wanted to give back, but they didn't. They just wanted to use the children, stand on their backs. What recourse did hurting parents have?

Gerald Williams led the way inside the clean but rundown building. It had a fire escape, providing a quick exit if the press or the police got too close. You could just jump from the fire escape to the next building. I'd done it in the building where we had lived when I was growing up. But if I had noticed it, so would others. Donna Kate wouldn't jeté very far.

We climbed the steps to the third and top floor in silence. Gerald opened one of the doors on the left and motioned. He didn't follow as I stepped inside. I heard the door click behind me.

The woman I saw stretching her leg at the makeshift barre along one wall could have been the model for any dance magazine photo -- she had been. From her bent-over position, she murmured, "Just a minute." Donna Kate took a deep breath as she lifted up, moving her leg off the barre. It was the middle of the night and this woman was warming up.

She grabbed the towel hanging over the end of the barre and draped it around her neck, then waved her hand toward the solitary chair in a comer of the room and started flexing her foot back and forth.

"I know this is an inconvenience. Thank you for coming," she said, all business. I looked at this tall, thin woman who'd become a pariah -- her braided hair pulled back and her hands behind her.

"I'm glad your husband called me," I said. "How are you doing?"

"I asked Gerald to contact you because you have a reputation around the city. You aren't the first to jump on anyone's bandwagon -- either for or against."

I watched as she kept flexing her foot.

"So, what happened?" I asked, getting to the point.

"Lisa Jenkins was my star pupil," Donna Kate answered, just as directly. "She had a phenomenal talent." She gave me a look. "I know you and others outside the arts see us as full of hyperbole, but Lisa really had it. She could execute a flawless -- ." Donna Kate stopped herself. "I wouldn't knowingly be a part of hurting that child. Why would I?" I saw tears in her eyes. "She was following in my footsteps. We took every spare minute to practice together." She looked down at the floor.

I tugged her back.

"You created a piece specifically for her?" Beverly had told me how Lisa had been practicing a special dance. The other students had talked of nothing else.

"Yes." Donna Kate shivered then composed herself.

"Yes, I did," she said in a stronger voice. "I created my best work for her-in the tradition of the spiritual. It is called The Penitent. The Company in New York was sponsoring a competition and this piece, properly done, had everything that the true admirer of the dance would appreciate." Donna Kate whispered fiercely. "And Lisa could do it."

I sat and watched as she lost herself again in the telling, half-walking, half-dancing across the floor.

"The Penitent comes before God and her dance is a plea for forgiveness. She has willfully committed many sins and knows that only God can grant her the forgiveness that she seeks.

This is a very unique collection of short stories built around a theme created by Staven-Elliot Altman. Some important writers such as Harry Turtledove, Kit Reed, Tananarive Due, and William F. Nolan, along with plenty of up-and-comers in speculative fiction and horror, have done great things with Altman's backdrop – a disease called Depriver Syndrome in which the sufferers are prohibited by law from touching other people. This is surely an allegory for AIDS and other real-life epidemics in which the innocent sufferers have been made into hateful outcasts by social ignorance and paranoia. With the exception of Janet Asimov's corny and hyperbolic sci-fi contribution (which also breaks the continuity built by the editors), the stories here are uniformly stirring and haunting, as the writers explore different aspects of the disease and its effects, both personal and social. Interestingly, only a few tackle the crushing loneliness a Depriver would feel during a lifetime of not being allowed to touch other people. Many of the stories explore the widespread paranoia that could result in an under-informed and discriminatory society, surely based on the AIDS crisis. Meanwhile several of the most stirring stories look at non-Deprivers who wish to contract the syndrome for anti-establishmentarian thrills or for personal fulfillment. There are also a few stories about Deprivers spreading their disease on purpose, as a means of revenge or extortion, revealing many uncomfortable aspects of human nature. This is a great collection of short stories that really live up to the haunting and disturbing theme created by Altman. [~doomsdayer520~]

What a cool book! The world of Deprivers Syndrome is 100% believable, and the stories that Altman and Merla have collected here are all page-turners. The possibilites for this are endless... I hope that someone takes advantage of it! I'd love to read more. Anyone who likes the X-Files should pick up this book asap. Lots of fun!

The chart is so incredible when you are studying the bible under this format. It shows a timeline from Adam and Eve on past Jesus to the end of the bible. It shows the actual dates that the events in the bible happened. It shows other historical events that happened at the same time in history. It shows who the world power is at any given time in history. It divides the stories into periods and color coats them. It shows where on a map that each event takes place. It shows at the top the order to read the bible chapters to put all these stories in order so you can fit them together in your head and make more sense of it all. Fantastic tool!

The Great Adventure with the Bible Timeline chart, in and of itself was a help to me in creating a timeline for my flying sage "Cleared for Takeoff" which is still in production. However, The Great Adventure, with workbook, and DVD sessions by author Jeff Cavins is a goldmine. Having gone to seminary, and allegedly studied the entire Bible, I found the Mr. Cavins brings out many pieces of information that really brings that long history to a brighter light. You don't need to read the Bible through from cover to cover to understand God's message. In fact, if you try to figure it out by reading it all, most people would just become more confused. As these other reviews have stated, it does stop at Acts. So be it. That doesn't stop one from going on, especially in the New Testament. For anyone who really wants to understand more clearly, the message of the Bible, this is a superb place to start.

Another Excellent Work in the Dumb Ox Series

This is a great translation of Aquinas' comments on Aristotle's work titled, "Metaphysics." Ralph McInerny (Notre Dame University) wrote the preface and the work was translated by John P. Rowan. Both men are strong in their field of expertise and both are Thomists. The book is a phrase by phrase/paragraph by paragraph commentary written by Aquinas on Aristotle's actual work. In other words, Aquinas took what Aristotle espoused in his "Metaphysics" and discussed it in great detail. Aquinas was not shy about admitting what he disagreed and agreed with in Aristotle's philosophy. So not only is the reader of this addition getting the actual translated text of Aristotle's work, but also Aquinas' remarks. This is an incredible reference/resource work for those who are either studying Aristotle's "Metaphysics," the thoughts of Thomas Aquinas, or perhaps both. The book is 839 pages of solid text and very well organized so the reader knows the parts that are Aristotle's (which are all italicized) and Aquinas'(which are in plain type). This book, if for no other reason, at least helps the student of both philosophers gain a better understanding of each; since Aquinas is at his best when commenting about Aristotle's work and the actual text of Aristotle is present for the reader to digest. This paragraph from the back cover of the book well describes what the buyer and reader can expect from such a great work as this - "Thomas Aquinas finds the twelve books he comments on wonderful for their order, both overall and in the minutest detail. His reading is governed by what he takes to be the clear sense of the text, his interpretations keep close to what Aristotle actually said, his account is breathtaking in its acuity." Thus, this is a work that you will not want to miss, since, unfortunately, books of this nature have a short a shelf life.

Best kind of commentary

Dudes, if you ever want to understand Aristotle and who doesn't? If you ever want to understand Thomistic theology and who doesn't? You got to get your paws on this book. D*** but it's fascinatin'. And St. Thomas, he does love him some Aristotle. Now this ain't no chick-attention gettin' book. S***, most chicks I know don't know any Aristotle at all, but it is one fascinatin' if laborious way to get a handle on that Dude, whether you're a real Thomist or just a cheese-eatin,' cigarette smokin', kitty-litter-emptyin' French existentialist. If you do nothing else with this, ya gots ta git it for a reference. Momma and the kiddies are even usin' it in homeschool and while they ain't goin' through the whole thing they are referencing it for various theological teachings. Did I mention that St. Thomas loves him some theology too? No workin' man's library should be without this volume.

About the Author
Professor Robert L. Devaney received his A.B. from Holy Cross College and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1973. He taught at Northwestern University, Tufts University, and the University of Maryland before coming to Boston University in 1980. He served there as chairman of the Department of Mathematics from 1983 to 1986. His main area of research is dynamical systems, including Hamiltonian systems, complex analytic dynamics, and computer experiments in dynamics. He is the author of An Introduction to Chaotic Dynamical Systems, and Chaos, Fractals, and Dynamics: Computer Experiments in Modern Mathematics, which aims to explain the beauty of chaotic dynamics to high school students and teachers.

There Are Better Choices

This is a fine text, and I was able to follow it fairly easily. However, it is rather dated (1992) and there have been improvements in the subject in several areas. I found Steven Strogatz's "Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos" (2001) a significantly better book for both content and readability.

Good text for a second or third year course

This is a good textbook to use for a second or third year course introducing dynamical systems. Using this book you could teach a course that both isn't too simple minded and yet isn't too abstract. The material in this book also motivates a lot of further deep material in dynamical systems, and I think that it could be encouraging to students who are seeing metric spaces, complex analysis and differential equations in purer settings to see that this theory has tangible applications. This would also be a good course for students not majoring in mathematics, to see that mathematics can be exciting in a way that a first year calculus or linear algebra course is not. There aren't many mathematics courses that could usefully be taken by mathematics students and non-mathematics students; the only other topic I can see being suitable is classical geometry.

Too "Trendy" or Not Another Corporate Branding "How To" Design Book?

But this one is about freedom. Yes, freedom of thought, freedom of style, freedom of exploration and paradigm breaking. There are tons of logo and corporate branding books out there but this book series stands out. Presented collections of logos are hip, crude and sometimes provocative. The book celebrates graphics design as it is rather then doing something permanent. It aims at the everyday design: logos for an exhibition, a local retail or online radio station.

Content of the book is divided into categories, which are: Corporate, Culture, Design, Fashion, Motion/ Games/ Media, Music, Art/ Unclassifiable, Political and Sports. Although it could be even better if there were some details on presented graphics, because it is not obvious where is real logos, concepts, presentations or just random graphics as they scattered all together.

Such a wide range of current creativity is a great place to begin your new graphic project and to get you thinking in a variety of ways. This is a great brainstorming tool. The variety of styles helps promote new ideas and concepts. The format of the book is also working on its usability. It is bound and stitched with thick hardboard cover and has a top printing quality. This book was made to be used long time.

If you haven't got any book on logo design yet, then it will be a great to start with. But if you are in search of a breakdowns of logo designs with deep case studies, as I mentioned before, this one is not a "how to" book.

The Atlas of Liver Transplantation is a beautiful text that presents the science and art of liver transplantation to the world of academic medicine and beyond. Dr. Molmenti cleverly incorporates detailed illustrations that go above and beyond what the limitations of photography can provide in descriptive medical education.

This text is not limited merely to surgical technique but is a comprehensive approach to the whole space of liver transplantation including the supportive disciplines of anesthesia and hematology.

As a student of the History of Organ Transplantation I found this book to be the current state-of-the state presentation of this discipline. Not only is this a "must have" for any surgical resident considering this advanced field but a useful inclusion to the book shelf to any surgical resident, medical student or lover of academic medicine.
