The author of The Outsider , etc., further maintains that sexual perversionssuch as those catalogued by Richard von Krafft-Ebingscarcely existed before 1740; only after Romanticism unleashed modern imaginations did sexual deviance flourish, he asserts. The "sexual outsiders" whose deliciously naughty doings are chronicled in this thought-provoking, entertaining mishmash are men who used libido as rocket fuel to escape the body's confines and soar toward higher consciousness. They include Swinburne and T. E. Lawrence, both of whom liked to be flogged; Yukio Mishima, trapped inside his womb-like subjective world; Byron, titillated by an incestuous affair with his half-sister; egoist Henry Miller; and guilt-ridden, promiscuous homosexual Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wilson's starting-point is Charlotte Bach (born Carl Hajdu), a Hungarian male transvestite of whose farfetched theory of eros and evolution the author makes too much as he hammers home his thesis that sex resides as much in the heart and the imagination as in the loins.

IMAGINATION AND HUMAN EVOLUTION

The literary reviews of THE MISFITS mostly emphasize that Wilson's book is worth reading because it is about sex, and specifically about the sexual deviations of many famous people, including Paul Tillich, Havelock Ellis, and Carl Jung. This does indeed make the book fascinating. In fact, the book could well be entitled "A History of Pornography," or more generally, "A History of Sex in Western Literature." But this is NOT what the book is really about.

The basic thesis of THE MISFITS is that man is capable of being in control of his own evolution through the power of his imagination. The primary problem is that our imagination is too often embroiled in -- and hence stunted by -- indulgence in sex. People cultivate the indulgent child within themselves because it gives them so much pleasure; but such cultivation of sexual deviation leads to self ignorance and lack of self control. Most people probably know the joke that the brand name Adidas stands for, "All day I dream about sex." Unfortunately, this is really an accurate description. So if one did not waste so much mental energy obsessed with sexual and romantic daydreams, what would occupy one's mind instead? This is the important question Colin Wilson addresses. The human mind most often functions like a robot - like Susan Blackmore's "meme machine" - so we spend most of our time in dreary triviality and repetition, with a worm's eye view of the world. Colin Wilson presents the optimistic premise that we can develop the imagination to give us a bird's eye view of the world, and hence give life meaning. This makes him one of the most important writers of our time.

Wilson is often criticized for being gullible and superstitious. He speaks of developing "hidden powers," the most important of which is "Faculty X: the ability to suddenly grasp the reality of other times and places," all of which smacks of the occult (and in fact, on of Wilson's most interesting books is THE OCCULT). In THE MISFITS, Wilson employs Rupert Sheldrake's theory of "morphic resonance," which includes the notion that when something has once been learned by some people, other people can learn it more readily. Sheldrake is generally considered a crackpot by the mainstream scientific community, and it has even been suggested that his books should be burned. This assessment is supposed to be based on Sheldrake's flawed scientific procedure. This might be so, though I have only heard his ideas denigrated, and have yet to hear specific reasons why his observations are untrustworthy. If consciousness is an intrinsic property of the universe, and there is no reason why this assumption is less reasonable than the assumption that it is an unintended consequence of blind physical processes, then such phenomena as synchronicity and morphic resonance are not inherently absurd.

Flawed but interesting.

This book is fundamentally flawed. It accepts, Lamarckism (the inheritance of acquired characteristics), still more ridiculously that 'advances in the level of human consciousness can be passed on by a kind of magnetic induction', and ultimately that 'life is fundamentally good'.
So, for Wilson there is no struggle for life and survival of the fittest.
The basic thesis of this book is also a non event: the author refutes the theory that sexual deviation stays on a higher step on the evolution ladder than normal sexual behaviour.
But for those who didn't read the biographies of Byron, de Sade, D.H. Lawrence, Wittgenstein, Swinburne, Joyce, Mishima, H. Miller, P. Tillich, A. Koestler, P. Grainger and others, they will find good analyses of their attitude to life (and sex).
This book also contains good comments on some basic ideas about sex (physical and psychological) and on the importance of imagination.
I confess that I had to consult more than once a solid English dictionary in order to understand the laundry list of sexual deviations.
All in all, a very mixed bag.

Rich Dad broke the code.

I ordered this book with a skeptical outlook. The other financial instruction books I purchased for my teen lasted all of ten minutes. This book arrived, she opened it, started reading, and didn't put it down until finished. She was so excited, she called me at work to tell me she had learned about assets, liabilities, expenses, and income. She said the concepts were so simple, she didn't understand why they aren't teaching this in school. Now, she's pointing out investments to me! Rich Dad actually got the attention and respect of a teenager. I'm very impressed.

Help Your Kids Save Their Pennies

This is a children's comic book that presents kids with the information that goes way beyond "Save your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." There are also subtle lessons on values and ethics, too. It shows--pictorially, using two different styles--how a youngster can put the concepts they represent immediately to work. The book goes well beyond the "save your pennies" philosophy I was raised on. The book introduces terms that some kids never hear until they take their first economics class. I liked the presentation style that looks vaguely like a Tim Allen movie--artistic washes, subtle tones. Kids will love the brightly colored segments. More importantly--for the parents at least--they are sure to absorb some sound ideas about ensuring their own futures. The purpose of the book is clear: the sooner you learn to manage your money, the more you'll have to enjoy.

About the Author

Kathleen G. Nadeau, PhD is a clinical psychologist and director of the Chesapeake ADHD Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she continues to practice. She has been a leader in the field for the past 20 years, publishing over a dozen books on topics related to ADHD. In 1999, she received the CHADD Hall of Fame Award for her ground-breaking work on women and girls with ADHD. Dr. Nadeau is a frequent lecturer both nationally and internationally focusing on her solution-focused, integrative approach to treating ADHD. QA Manager finds this book useless

I am a QA Manager for a game company, and have been in QA for nearly 20 years.

This book is totally useless, and should not be sold under that title.

Do not buy this book if you want to become a game tester.

I can't say it any simpler, this book is a waste.

As another reviewer already mentioned, it has about 8-10 pages of "content" and the rest is simply lists of colleges with technical degrees, and lists of game companies to apply to.

Useless.

No content, no help, no sale.

My test lead bought this book along with a few others to see if there was anything he could learn and pass on to his testers. After looking at it he realized the book is only about 8 pages of actual content and 100 pages of lists of colleges and studios. This isn't a book about how to become a tester. It's more like a printout of a Google search. If you really want to become a tester, all you have to do is do a little searching online. You'll get more than the info given here and not have to pay a dime for it.

In short, do not get this book.

Disappointed to say the least...

If I wanted a list of colleges that have game testing or programming courses to offer...I would have done a Google search.

This book is probably the most disappointing book I've ever purchased on Amazon.

As other reviewers have written, there is a slight bit of content, then most of the book is a listing of colleges.

I'm disappointed to say the least. I DO NOT recommend this book.

The book not only covers a biography of each theorist but a simplified yet reasonably detailed account and analysis of their theories and how they inter-relate with previous influencers. In this regard the entries are made in a chronological order so the reader can appreciate how theories have developed over the years.

Those interested in entering therapy either as client or therapist should note that the three main approaches of psychology are covered:
Psychodynamic, Humanistic and Behavioural. The Psychodynamic approach, including psychoanalytic, is the oldest with an emphasis on bringing the unconscious into consciousness so gaining greater self-knowledge. It is usually long-term work, often over a number of years, and in the case of psychoanalysis with several sessions each week. It delves into the past to discover the origins of our behavioural patterns and belief systems. The therapists are relatively silent, and refer to their clients as patients. The chief proponents are Freud, Jung and Klein.

The Humanistic approach includes Person-Centred, Gestalt, TA (Transactional Analysis), Existential and Integrative. The Humanistic approach sits between the Psychodynamic and Behavioural approaches and can embrace elements of both. This model tends to be shorter term than Psychodynamic, but tends to be longer than the brevity of CBT. Therapists usually have a more interactive and equal relationship with their clients than psychodynamic therapists, and less of the purely teaching relationship of a CBT practitioner. Although Humanistic therapists consider it important to look at past experiences, the main thrust is to help a client feel sufficiently empowered so that they can take better control of their life. The key names here are Rogers, Berne and Perls.

The Behavioural approach covers CBT (Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy) and REBT (Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy). These approaches are the youngest of the three and are different from the first two in that they focus on the here and now and do not investigate the causes. It is brief therapy with the aim of helping clients unlearn their negative and unhelpful reactions to situations and learn new ways of reacting. Understanding how a client came by their belief system is not considered and consequently the longer-term effectiveness of CBT has yet to be examined. Research does show that CBT can produce very effective benefits in the short term. The book discusses Skinner, Beck, Ellis and Eysenck and several others.

rather sloppy editing

The book feels rather rushed. Sometimes totally superfluous details ("Mariahilfer Straße 208 in Rudolfsheim, a village on the western fringes of Vienna") sometimes using concepts without explanation ("using the therapeutic functions of insight and meaning") and sometimes there are sentences that make no sense ("Accordingly, his critics claim that Freud’s theories are falsifiable, in that they can neither be proved true or refuted."). I wouldn't mind the occasional error, but this is just from the first three chapters. I am not sure I can trust the author, with regard to the content.
