Paul Rand (1914-1996) was a pioneering figure in American graphic design whose career spanned almost seven decades. Always enquiring and investigating, he explored the formal vocabulary of European avant-garde art movements and synthesised them to produce a distinctive graphic language. Rand was a major force in editorial design, advertising and corporate identity. He was art director at "Esquire" and "Apparel Arts" magazines, and he designed the ground-breaking covers for the cultural journal "Direction". He worked at the Weintraub Advertising Agency from 1941-1954 and, in 1955, established his own design studio, acting as consultant to companies such as IBM, Westinghouse and UPS. His logos for these companies are world-renowned design classics. This book comprises a definitive collection of Rand's works, through an exploration of his advertising, publishing and corporate identity work. Steven Heller's text, with a foreword by designer Armin Hofmann, introduction by advertising guru George Lois, and a concluding essay by designer and writer Jessica Helfand, offer an insight into Paul Rand's work.

A pioneer in the field of visual communication, Rand developed a fresh and individual design language drawn from European art movements including Russian constructivism, de Stijl, and the Bauhaus. His career as an art director, teacher, writer, and design consultant to major corporations spanned almost seven decades. Rand arguably got his start at the tender of 3 when he first began to secretly copy pictures of the attractive Palmolive models pictured in advertising displays in his father's grocery store in Brooklyn, New York. He later modeled his aesthetic on avant-garde artists like Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, and architect Le Corbusier, each of whom advocated a timeless spirit in design. Rand began his career in an era when working by hand was a given, a reality that would change before his eyes as the mass media, entertainment, and consumer industries were revolutionized by increasingly technical equipment, and ultimately the computer.

Steven Heller, senior art director at The New York Times and prominent author of numerous design books, presents this meticulously researched and detailed survey, which marks the first complete retrospective of Rand's powerful body of work, exploring the full range of his advertising, publishing, and corporate identity projects. Eminent designer Armin Hofmann writes the forward, and the introduction is penned by advertising legend George Lois, who writes, "The constant concern of the scholarly and humanistic Paul Rand was to create images that snared people's eyes, penetrated their minds, warmed their hearts and made them act." About the Author
Steven Heller is the art director of the NY Times Book Review and co-chair of the MFA Design program at the School of Visual Arts. He is the editor of the AIGA online journal, VOICE. He is a contributing editor to PRINT, EYE, Baseline, and ID. He writes frequently for Metropolis and other design magazines. He is author, co-author, and editor of over 90 books on design and popular culture.

George Lois, a native New Yorker, joined Doyle Dane Bernbach as an art director in 1958 and started his first agency in 1960. He is the recipient of an AIGA Gold Medal, among other honours, and the author of two books on advertising. He continues to consult for major corporations.

Jessica Helfand is a partner at Winterhouse, a design collaborative in New England, and a founding editor of "Design Observer," She teaches in the graduate program in graphic design at Yale University and has written several books on design and cultural criticism. She lives in Falls Village, CT.

The Late Great Paul Rand

If you know anything about design, the words Paul Rand retain some meaning for you. It may be vague, perhaps one of your professors recommended you look him up, maybe one of your design icons listed him as an influence.

Or quite likely you have seen some of his work, and never knew the man behind such world famous, global dominating logos. This has to be the most in depth Paul Rand book I have read, and I have borrowed many from various libraries. Which inclines me to say that if the history of design has ever intrigued you or you just like Mr.Rands work, then this is probably the best choice for you. Not only does it have a ton of images but it's probably the best bang for you buck as far as Rand books go.

Buy a Magnifying Glass

This is a pretty thorough book on a graphic design icon. Unfortunately, the book is typeset very poorly in an 8pt serif font. Reading more than a few pages at a time strains your eyes and results in a headache - ironic considering Rand was a firm believer in usable design.

Lots of full color samples of Rand's work to coincide with the text, which is nice.

Overall, this book is a great resource. It's too bad the type is so difficult to read.

Spencer A. Rathus received his Ph.D. from the University at Albany and is on the faculty of The College of New Jersey. Best Middle Grade Novel Ever!

Ms. Hiranandani's fantastic debut novel is not only an important and creatively crafted book for young readers but as an adult, I enjoyed the ride back to adolescence connecting to all the joys and heartaches many of us experience. The main character Sonia represents a unique but also universal experience of growing up. Ms. Hiranandani's writing allowed me to connect to Sonia, her friends and family as fully developed characters. I became lost in the book and am now reading it with my son. A fantastic book for parents and young readers to read together!

My Daughters LOVE this book.

My daughters (10 and 12) both read this book in one sitting. They could not put it down. Such a refreshing book--tackles big social issues with wonderful dialogue--fast-paced and keeps the language at middle-grade level. The main character, Sonia, is believable and likable--she deals as best she can with her father's depression, and yet the story remains upbeat and light. So glad we have added this fantastic book to our shelf! Will certainly re-read again and again, and will recommend it to friends!

I really applaud this book for tackling a lot of big issues and balancing them well while keeping the book at a middle-grade level. To start with, this book looks at a young girl in a typical nuclear family, parents and sister, who live a comfortable existence. After her father loses his job, it causes a big shift in the family dynamics and precipitates a lot of change.

This could totally have been an issue book. Sonia's dad loses his job, causing a big change in the family finances and pushing her dad into depression. Sonia has to leave her beloved private school to start sixth grade at public school where she has to navigate mean girls and an entirely different school culture. She also starts to wonder: is she Indian? Is she Jewish? Can she be both? Plus she's growing up and is soon going to be a teenager with all those emotional issues. Basically there's a lot of stuff here! Any one of those could have been the focus of a book. But this one never felt weighted down despite the seriousness, which I would have to say speaks well of the writer. At times some issues were dealt with superficially in my opinion but remember that this is a middle-grade novel and for that age group, I would say it does a good job.

Particularly interesting to me was the family situation. I don't think I've read many books with a depressed character and seeing its impact on this family really struck me. I also really loved Sonia, which is a big plus. She's confused about some of the changes in her life and is just trying to do the best she can. Of course, she makes mistakes (one colossally huge one later in the book) but she always retained my interest and sympathy.

Overall: A very pleasant experience with excellent balance between light and serious for a fast and absorbing read.

Too much fluff and not enough pith

This book is currently being used as a textbook in a computer 101 class I am teaching at my local community college. This is the second time I have taught this class using this book. First, the major pros for the text: It is spiral bound so it lays flat. Chapters are in a logical order. Each MS Office application gets three chapters. Topics are presented in project format with two projects with very detailed steps - this can be a plus or a minus depending upon your point of view. There are lots of additional projects, exercises, questions, and other pedagogical features to endear it to teachers, and this book would most likely work well for the self-learner (with some caution). The publisher provides many, many resource files for the instructor and the student.

Now, for some cons.

As mentioned, each project has a great many detailed steps and lends itself well to what I call "recipe style" learning. Meaning that if you can read, you should be able to produce the desired results. However, this is the feedback I get from the majority of my students: "I am following the steps, but I don't know why I am doing them." Clearly, the concepts are being lost! No actual learning is taking place. This becomes evident if I present a short quiz on the basic concepts presented in the project. The students are getting lost because of too many detailed steps. Most of the steps say click here, pull down that, select this, and on and on. Which leads to the next major problem with this text. Most of the focus of the project steps is on the appearance of the project: pretty printing, glitz and glitter, and lots of fluff. This is not particularly surprising since Microsoft has put emphasis on those same things since about MS Office 2003. I found the chapters on Excel to be particularly bad, and to the point where I presented my own material.

Some of the problem with these projects is also the fault of the student data files for the project. Perhaps too much of the work in setting up the project is being done. If the students had to create the project from scratch, they would be more in tune with what they are trying to accomplish. In earlier courses, I created my examples that the students created from scratch, and they focused on one concept. Then I ended with a simple project that tied the concepts together.

Finally, a few words to the self-learner: The good news is that you will not need an instructor to use this book. The steps are reasonably clear with only minor differences between the book and the actual Office application being used. The bad news is that you will need to study the project carefully in order to pull out the actual concepts that are going to be important to remember in order to use MS Office applications with any degree of expertise. My best advice is to go slowly, practice - practice - practice, and keep a notebook handy for keeping track of major concepts learned.

great book; but beware errors

Good selection of words and learning aids are very good, but... there are a number of errors. For example "edification" is a noun, but is defined as "enlighten" which is a verb. "Gambit" is defined as a verb; it is a noun. "Malcontent" is defined as a adjective; it is a noun. These examples are from only the first 20% of the book; there are lots more. If you know these words already, you might not notice these things, but if you are trying to learn them... so beware. It is actually a good exercise to try to catch these inconsistencies because SAT/ACT exams also test usage, not just meaning. On another note, it would be nice if the book more consistently listed and explicitly distinguished between primary and secondary meanings, since those tests often try to trick students with secondaries. Again, a good book that just needs a more thorough edit.

For FAST, EFFECTIVE memorization!

This book is great! I am halfway through the 290 words and I remember all the ones i learned! the mnemonic devices utilize one way the brain learns: visual association. this book is not kidding when it claims that you will learn "a word a minute and youll never forget it". The visual mnemonics are hilarious and silly, often ridiculous, which is great because our brains tend to remember anomalies, and pictures are worth a thousand words remember? The pictures are very well done too. Here's one of my favorite examples:

HUSBANDRY
(HUZ bun dree)n.
management of resources, esp. in agriculture

Link: HUSBAND TREE

*picture inserted of a woman standing proudly holding a pitchfork next to a tree. Male farmers are shown hanging by their trousers on the branches*

"To help in her HUSBANDRY chores, Aunt Emma had her own HUSBAND TREE."

(Examples Sentences)

Bud's superb HUSBANDRY of his orange grove resulted in a larger than expected crop this year.

(HUSBANDRY is the practive of conserving resources; to HUSBAND is to economize) Experts say the world's oil resources will soon be exhausted, and we must soon begin to HUSBAND oil.

Everyone in our squad HUSBANDED their share of water for the long trek back to the barracks.

This mnemonic method helps you not only learn, but retain hundreds of words. So the next time you encounter the word husbandry, you will automatically think "husband tree" and then the picture of a bunch of men hanging from a tree will come into your mind, and then you will remember the funny sentence, and finally, the definition. btw, this will all happen in an instant. The three example sentences will help you learn the words in context, and there is a review after every 10 words to assess what you learned. This book will be extremely helpful for the SAT!

However, there are reasons why I didn't give this a 5 out of 5 rating. For one thing, there are only 290 words in this book. yes, there is another volume, but in total there's only 580 words, and you need to know more for the SAT. i recommend getting a vocabulary book like Princeton Review's Word Smart or Norman Lewis's Word Power Made Easy as a supplement. yes, they are not quite as fun as VC, but they do have a lot more words.

Two, sometimes the link word and picture have NOTHING to do with the definition of the word, to the point where the mnemonic can't help you memorize the word. For example, what does a man being stuck in an AIRTIGHT jar have to do with being ERUDITE?

Three, the words in this book are particularly easy. I knew a lot of the words in the book before reading it. for example, ajar, aftermath, abhor, allure, alternative, antecedent, appalling, artisan, aspire, astute, asunder, assuage, bizzare, bleak, certify, chide, comprise, cower, cranny, creditor, criterion, damper,deft, dillema, disperse, docile, dormant,embellish, emit, embody, endure, enrage, entice, emulate, evoke, feign, generalize, giddy, gloat, and more and I'm only halfway through! But then again, my vocabulary isn't that bad, so it depends, are you a vocabulary Einstein? If you are, say a junior/senior in high school and very diligent in memorizing list after list of words, then this book will not be a doozy. But if you are a lazy person lacking of vocabulary and don't feel like memorizing mundane lists but need a quick and easy method to memorize words, then this book is perfect! however, it doesn't hurt to reinforce what you know right?

The gripes I have do not take away from the quality of this excellent book and the effectiveness of the methods. I can't wait to read the second volume as well! Definitely buy this book NOW, you will not regret it!

Great concept, but shabby execution.

Revised and Updated Edition!

Unlike the second volume, the cartoons in the first volume are well drawn.

I have several gripes with this book. It barely achieves its purpose. Before giving it to someone who greatly appreciated it, I went through the book and made corrections, so that the learner would not learn incorrect English. One would expect the pronunciations to be consistent and correct. The example sentences sound like a 7th grader's first attempt to use the word in a sentence. The definitions seem to use more SAT words to clarify the meaning of the word.

I would think they would correct all the mistakes when they update the book.

Following are some embarrassing mistakes:

Comprise: The word "comprise" is never followed by the word "of." The authors knew this rule, but still made the mistake of writing, "was comprised of..." and later forgetting to erase the "was."

"It was not a pleasant surprise when the pirates discovered their treasure was comprised only party favors."
"The first aid kit was comprised a bottle of aspirin, two gauze pads, and a pair of scissors."

Fathom: (fa THUM) Have you ever heard this word pronounced with emphasis on the last syllable? I checked all my dictionaries and of course the word is (FATH um).

Vol. 2:

Terse: (terce) That is the helpful guide to pronunciation. First of all, who would use the letter "c" in guiding pronunciation? An "s" or a "k" will suffice. Secondly, even if the authors chose to use "c" to mean "s," the adjacent page has tenacious pronounced (teh NAY shus); the last "s" makes the appropriate sound. Be consistent!

Obtrude: (aub TROOD)

Obese: (oh BEECE) Again...the letter "c" is the least helpful letter for pronunciation, when "s" would work.

Malcontent: Some of you may think I am being overly strict with regard to proper English, but the reason I am being strict is because this is an educational book pretending to teach English. The example sentence reads, "We seem to always have one malcontent who can negatively impact team spirit." The word "impact," does not mean "affect" or "influence." To "have an impact on" is the way to write it. If you use "impact" as a verb, and some would only use it as a noun, then it means "slam into, collide, crush."

Bequest: link: GO WEST. Mnemonic device sentence: "Joe's last bequest was to go west." How on earth this mnemonic sentence has anything to do with the meaning of the word. If anything, it would only confuse the student.

One more annoyance with the book is this: readers get frustrated when two words, which have the same definition (beset, beleaguer), are in the same chapter, and in the same "matching" quiz. So they arbitrarily pick one or the other, or throw the book down.

(If anyone points out a misspelling or grammatical error in this review, I'm fine with that. After all, I am not publishing and selling a book to teach students English.)
