About the Author
CLEVELAND SALMON is an architect and maintains a private practice in Antioch, Tennessee. In private practice he specializes in affordable, energy-efficient design, with completed works in Jamaica, St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands), and North America. Mr. Salmon studied architecture at the University of Technology (formerly the College of Arts, Science, and Technology) in Kingston, Jamaica, and at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Another, much better, BooK:

COURTYARDS: Aesthetic, Social, and Thermal Delight; by John Reynolds, published November 2001.
Courtyards contains a huge amount of valuable information for building in hot humid and hot dry climates. Not only a "pretty picture book," Courtyards takes the reader through width to depth ratios; height and width proportions; comfort zone enhancement through thermal mass, ventilation, and shading; and much more. In fact, although Courtyards is similarly priced as the book above, I thought it contained 10 times as much valuable information - real information that I could put to immediate use for my projects in the Yucatan. Color and B&W photos and line drawings illustrate the many considerations for hot weather design, yet the book is not overly technical. Nor is it over-simplified, which is the main problem with Tropical Regions.
Tropical Regions remains the only book I've had to return to Amazon - even a year later - with dozens and dozens of books ordered.
GOOD books about tropical housing design are very hard to come by and I'd like to point searchers in the right direction. Since architecture books in general are usually so expensive, finding a useful selection is very important.
Also, I have to echo the writer below. Richard Hyde's book CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN...for Hot Humid Climates is also very helpful. I felt it was a little more technical and not as colorful as COURTYARDS. Either would be a good place to start your research for tropical housing construction.

Scanty Information, despite the Book Description's claims

I have to agree with Rainer Mebus. This book is going to be returned. It is not suited for architects or anyone with even basic concepts of building siting and construction. A hodge-podge of photographs, gathered from various places, do nothing to illustrate examples of the textual concepts. As far as being an "indispensible source," statements such as (p102) "A hat or cool shade is often useful when exposed to sun... as the sun can be very bright when the sky is clear and the sunlight is intense." or (p103) "Vegetation is luxuriant where rainfall is high." & (p105) "The effects of earthquakes are mainly economic, although poorly constructed buildings can result in loss of life." are hardly indispensible and belong more in an elementary school than a volume that claims to be "essential reading for architects and other building professionals."
Mebus is correct that all of the data here contained is readily found in other, better and cheaper books. I was hoping that the longer and first review was more correct, but was sadly disappointed that newer concepts, techniques and materials were not discussed in a book printed in 1999. Further, all the information contained can be found in basic architectural concepts courses or books and is only slightly tailored to fit the idea of "tropical construction." The author borrows diagrams and descriptions from many other texts.

Tropical Architecture in a Nut Shell

Cleveland Salmon has thought of everything! When dealing with tropical architecture, there is a lot to think about. Salmon energetically lists almost every possible condition found in the built tropics from desert dryness to humid jungle conditions. This book serves the tropical architect like a shopping list or as a reminder of what conditions must not be overlooked when planning to build in the tropics, wherever that may be.
My only negative comment would be that the chapters are way too brief. Nevertheless, this book is worth its weight in gold for all the topics and subtopics it includes. Once seeing this compendium as an overview, anyone can deepen an interest or concern with other sources. This book on tropical architecture, however, is where you want to start.

Not razor-sharp, but still recommended...

In preparation for a webcast I'm giving this month, I'm working through the book Eclipse by Steve Holzner (O'Reilly). While not perfect, it's a good tool for learning about the package.

Chapter list: Essential Eclipse; Java Development; Testing and Debugging; Working in Teams; Building Eclipse Projects Using Ant; GUI Programming: From Applets to Swing; SWT: Buttons, Text, Labels, Lists, Layouts, and Events; SWT: Menus, Toolbars, Sliders, Trees, and Dialogs; Web Development; Developing Struts Applications with Eclipse; Developing a Plug-in: The Plug-in Development Environment, Manifests, and Extension Points; Developing a Plug-in: Creating Editors and Views; Eclipse 3.0; Index

For the person new to Eclipse, this will do a decent job in getting you started. Up through the Using Ant chapter, the focus is primarily on Eclipse. The examples deal with the package, and that seems to be the primary focus. After that, the style seems to change a bit. The GUI development chapters seem to focus a lot on GUI programming, and then after that's finished, they show you how to do it in Eclipse. Mind you, it's good information, but the focus has shifted. The plug-in chapter gets back to Eclipse as the primary focus again. While there are entire books dedicated to plug-in development, this chapter will get you comfortable with the idea and concepts.

So is the book perfect? No. I feel that the material could have been a bit more consistent as to what the foremost goal was... learning the Eclipse platform. But having said that, it still accomplishes the goal of teaching you how Eclipse works in different scenarios. I'd definitely recommend this as an initial Eclipse text for someone.

O'Reilly swings and misses with this one

I've used big time and expensive IDEs in my time, Together Control Center to name just one, and I was excited to finally get Eclipse and begin learning it. I always look for an O'Reilly book on a subject first because they are usually really good. This book, although good, misses the point of the title of the book. It should have been titled "Intro to Web Programming with an Introduction to Eclipse".

Another reviewer pointed out that the first three chapters covers how to use Eclipse. The rest concentrate on actually using Eclipse to do each chapter's small projects - GUI, Web, and plugins.

I was looking for a book that covered Eclipse in total, how to use it, the neat stuff, everything that Eclipse has to offer. This book doesn't even tell me how to makea bookmark in Eclipse. I saw that in the Eclipse Cookbook TOC at O'Reilly.

The 3.0 coverage is minimal. This book is not about 3.0. That is to be expected since software changes faster than authors can learn the new versions and write the words.

This is a good book if you want a very gentle intro to Eclipse, but don't look to become an Eclipse GURU from it.

a dissapointment

first of all the book i got (yes i checked the isbn)
was only 317 pages and was not subtitled,
"A Java Developer's Guide" but instead "Programming Java Applications".
There was less than 20 pages coverage of 3.0. very lightwieght.
I wouldn't say this was a book for programmers, but the equivalent of a user's manual for eclipse(eclipse made EZ, or eclipse for VB programmers).
The first two chapters(60 pages) is just telling you what the menu items do. Almost all the material in this book was covered in the Manning Eclipse in Action book. The exception being this book had 3 chapters(60 pages on gui and swt), and a chapter on struts. I only kept the book for that stuff.
I get the impression this is just a knock-off that book so that O'Reilly gets some of the beginner market...
Probably not worth your time if you have used eclipse for more than 10 days...

This vibrant, relevant study from architects Ando, Fujimori and Isozaki looks at the present moment of a centuries-old Japanese tradition, the chashitsu, or "tea room." In first-person narratives, leading Japanese architects discuss their contemporary take on the classic tea ceremony space. Full-color photographs, design sketches and polished plans are clearly laid out along with text, and each chapter focuses on a number of works by a single architect. Fujimori's chapter, for example, includes an elaborate tree-top tea house, an "enormous woven bamboo birdcage" called The Forum and a room built especially to host France's President Chirac. Ando gets to the heart of the matter in his statement of purpose: "not to dwell solely on the abstract; but to explore abstract concepts by expressing them through material phenomena." Three more architects-Isozaki, Kengo Kuma and Hiroshi Hara-discuss their designs, and how they relate to the genre's traditions, in similar terms, focusing on the "tension between abstraction and representation." Especially fascinating are discussions of materials used: for Fujimori, the most important components are "raw, unworked materials" and "amateur artisans" to do all the building. About the Author

Recognized as one of the worlds leading architects, ARATA ISOZAKI is a frequent and sought-after lecturer who has been a visiting professor at UCLA, University of Hawaii, Rhode Island School of Design, Columbia, Harvard and Yale Universities. Among his projects are a large number of public and cultural buildings, including The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the COSI museum in Columbus, Ohio and Team Disney in Orlando. TADAO ANDO has served as a visiting professor at Yale,Columbia , and Harvard Universities and now holds the chair of a Special University Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. His work in the U.S. includes the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, St. Louis; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Morimoto restaurant in New York City; a house, stable and mausoleum for former fashion designer Tom Ford, near Santa Fe (in progress); the expansion of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts (in progress); as well as the new Tokyo Tower, which will be the tallest structure in the world upon completion. Ando was awarded the AIA Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects in 2002. TERUNOBU FUJIMORI is presently a professor at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo. His major research was in architectural history and design and he has written many essays and books. He began designing buildings only when he was in his 40s. Incredibly inspiring!

The interpretations showcased in The Contemporary Tea House are both freeing and inspiring. With materials ranging from traditional cedar trunks to stainless steel and fiberglass, and sizes from full house to single table, these architects all capture the essence of what a Tea House means and is intended to do. If you want to free your mind for a project of your own, you can't do better than to absorb the beauty and message carried in this book.

Building Tea Houses is Still Modern and Contemporary

When Sen Rikyu and his contemporary tea masters were struggling to form what today called cha-no-yu or tea ceremony, the art was avant-garde and "modern" but after hundreds of years of ritualization designing tea rooms are getting refined to long-held norm. This is the book on how modern Japanese architectural giants tackled with such breakthrough tasks. In here are world-renowned architects such as Arata Isozaki, Tadao Ando Terunobu Fujimor, Kengo Kuma and Hiroshi Hara. They tell us that designing tea rooms still has rooms for development and remains current.

You can visit some of the places introduced in this book while the others are either private houses or for one-time events. Particularly I enjoyed reading about the works of Fujimori because I have already visited one of his works in Hamamatsu.

Highly recommended for the students of architecture as well as excellent architecture appreciators.

About the Author
Thomas D. Gillespie, Ph.D., a Research Scientist at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, has taught courses on vehicle dynamics and automotive engineering at the University of Michigan. He also teaches vehicle dynamics courses at automotive manufacturers and suppliers. In 1987-88, he served on the White House staff as a Senior Policy Analyst in the Office of Science and Technology Policy. He later served as a consultant to the White House and chaired the Interagency Task Force to develop a National Action Plan on Advanced Superconductivity Research and Development. He is currently the Director of the Great Lakes Center for Truck Transportation Research.

A solid foundation

My background is in computer engineering. As such, I have a basic understanding of kinematics, but approached this book with little knowledge of physics as specifically applied to vehicles.
I found this book to be a perfect first step into the field. It picked up essentially where my knowledge left off and provided solid coverage of the topics discussed. Due to the nature of the book--an introductory text--simplifications often had to be made; in these cases the simplifications were pointed out, often with references to publications covering the areas more fully. Furthermore, I felt that all topics were evenly covered--no one got undue attention.
Basically, the book was just what I was looking for.
My only significant pet peeves are the use of English-system measurements (I am more comfortable with metric), and a few cases of unexplained 'magic numbers' in formulas (it took me a minute to realize that 57.3 is the number of degrees in a radian). And plot and character development were pretty thin (grin).

Good Solid Book

This is an excellent book for the basics of vehicle dynamics. It covers the main topics in a straightforward, easy to understand way and has good examples. The only thing preventing a 5 star rating is that the book is a little dated having been written in the late 1980's. Some of the references therefore need to be updated.
