2.5 stars - Major Spoilers!
By TracyJane
**I received an eARC of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
**WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD**
2.5 stars, rounded up and that's only because it is very well written.
I had a really hard time with this book. This was new author for me and while I found her writing style wonderful - the story itself was not to my liking.
I didn't like the "hero" Andrew - I found his character to be totally unbelievable. He is supposed to be an archeologist - I take that to be someone who deals in facts - someone who doesn't rush to judgment without gleaning all the available information and considering all the facts before proclaiming something. This man heard a rumor and made an assumption, did a tiny bit of research and NEVER asked the heroine any questions - he believed he knew he was right based on a rumor. Even if that was his only shortcoming - and trust me it wasn't - I am not sure I would have liked him. Not only was he a total jerk to Victoria from basically the moment he met her. He abandoned her right after the wedding night and basically ignored her for the next year - all the while living in Italy with another woman. That's right - he had a mistress before he met Victoria and went right back to her after he became betrothed and continued to live with her after he was married. This is a HUGE turnoff for me - if I had known the book had adultery - I would have NEVER requested it. If I had bought the book, I would have returned it unfinished. The only reason I finished this book is because it was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
I truly couldn't get past this -I know this doesn't bother every reader and this is my personal opinion. I believe the author did a good job trying to excuse Andrew - but for me there is no excuse for adultery - None. I hated him. I hated him for assuming Victoria was involved with her father's schemes - without one shred of evidence to support that theory and I hated him for running back to Luciana (the mistress) and ignoring Victoria's letters. He does finally (a year and a half after they marry) go back to England to try and set things right between them. But it killed me that he did it at his mistress' urging and there is also the little fact that SHE ended things with him - He didn't have an epiphany and end things with her so he could go to Victoria - She told him she was leaving him and he should go back to his wife.
Once he gets back to England, he does make a sincere effort to make things right with Victoria and I never once doubted that he loved his sisters - but I didn't believe he really cared about Victoria - he has seen her twice in a year and a half - has never responded to her letters, has carried on with another woman and now that she left him, I am supposed to believe that he has really cared about Victoria all along? Really?
I didn't blame Victoria one bit for the way she treated him upon his return - I mean the guy doesn't exactly have a good track record for sticking around, he doesn't communicate at all and the two times she has seen him - he as been nasty to her and taken off with barely a word. And this is without knowing about the mistress or his "reason" for hating her. Victoria has been groomed all her life to be a wife of a titled man - she has never expected love or even happiness. When Andrew abandoned her the day after their wedding, she tries to make the best of things. I liked her a lot. She isn't perfect - she admits she is out of her depth with the estate and asks for help. She continues to send him letters, even though he never responds. She is kind to his sisters and his tenants. She is a warm, loving generous person - who in my opinion deserves better than Andrew.
She doesn't trust Andrew when he returns and does her best to keep him at arms length - but he worms his way back into her heart. They form a fragile bond and then Andrew is called back to Italy. While he is gone - she finds out about Luciana and is devastated. Later she finds out what her father and mother did to secure her marriage to Andrew. She is truly horrified and decides to end her marriage - so poor Andrew can be happy - gag me! She falls ill and is on deaths door - her friend Gen summons Andrew back from Italy and tells him that Victoria has learned everything - he declares that everything is over with the other woman and that he doesn't care that her family manipulated their marriage - that all he cares about is Victoria (me, gagging again).
Victoria still feverish and very ill wakes and "knows" that Andrew is there and feels the need to make things right for him (honestly, I am wondering how I am going to be able to finish this book without breaking my kindle). He can't believe that he might lose her, just when he realizes that he can't live without her (me gagging and rolling my eyes).
Of course they work every thing out and exchange sickeningly sweet declarations of love - I just didn't feel it - I know I am the minority here and I am sure my bias about adultery ruined this book for me.
In defense of the author - this book was very well written and flowed extremely well. I think if the adultery was left out, I probably would have given this book a 4 star rating. Even though I did not enjoy this book, I would be more than willing to read future works by this author and I would recommend her to my friends - after I let them know about the adultery. If that sort of thing doesn't bother you - you will probably really like this book - if like me, it upsets you, I would say pass on this book, but not the author!

A pleasant surprise
By MominYogaPants
This author was brought to my attention by a popular blog I follow. The reviewer mentioned this book featured some of my favorite tropes: arranged marriage, a beta hero (!) epistolary action and it's set in the Victorian era. So, I took the plunge one clicked and oh I am so glad I did. Victoria Carson is an American heiress whose social climbing mother is determined to marry her off to a title. To that end she sends her daughter off to an exclusive finishing school to be trained on how to be the perfect aristocratic wife. Victoria knows her duty and she's in fact eager to get married. For Victoria marriage represents freedom from her horrible, grasping mother and her indifferent father. Andrew Hargrave is the second son of the impoverished Duke of Waring and an archeologist. He escaped his horrible parents and unhappy life in England to pursue his dreams of finding the tomb of an ancient Etruscan queen. His brother's untimely death, however, means that Andrew can no longer hide out in Italy as the unimportant spare. He is now an Earl and heir to a dukedom which brings him to the attention of Victoria's parents. Unbeknownst to Victoria , the Carson's take advantage of the Duke of Waring' s dire straits by tricking him into pouring his meager remaining funds into a bad investment and then finish him off in a card game where the Duke faces off against Carson and eventually has nothing else of value to bet except his son's hand in marriage to Victoria and her millions. So, Andrew is forced to return to England and do his duty by his hated family not because of any loyalty for his parents or title but because Andrew has two younger sisters away at school that he loves dearly. He knows his sisters will be left destitute by his father's irresponsible and reckless behavior. At first, Andrew is angry and resentful but he can't sustain his anger and resentment in the face of Victoria's beauty and charm. Victoria is helplessly attracted to Andrew and begins to develop feelings for him. She allows herself to hope for a happy marriage and a family of her own. Andrew reluctantly realizes she is as much a pawn in this scheme as he is or is she? Right before the wedding Andrew makes discoveries of the Carson's treachery that lead him to believe that Victoria schemed with her parents to buy herself a title. So, this is where Andrew becomes a bit of a giant d-bag. He departs England for Italy after his wedding night leaving a broken hearted Victoria in his family's run down, ramshackle estate in the country. Victoria doesn't stay down for long though, she decides she will take matters into her own hands and begins the slow, painstaking work of renovating the crumbling manor and returning it to its former glory. So, she begins a one sided correspondence with her absent husband telling him of her efforts and sort of asking him for permission to do things but doing them anyway. I loved this aspect of the story as this is her way of forcing Andrew to get to know her through her letters. Andrew is unwillingly captivated by his bride and also befuddled by her actions. Instead of flaunting her newly acquired status in London ballrooms she remains in Briarwood manor. He realizes he has unfairly judged her and eventually returns to give his marriage a chance and discover this woman he has helplessly halfway fallen in love with through her letters. When Andrew returns he finds a remote, self possessed duchess fiercely guarding her heart against him, who has against all odds restored his family's legacy and has given his unwanted sisters the family they never had. Can he put aside his resentment and convince Victoria to give him another chance? Andrew has a lot of groveling and making up to do to win back Victoria's battered heart. It is a delightful treat to watch him do just that.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. It reads almost like a throwback to those early nineties historicals except with a more modern sensibility. I absolutely loved how the author used the old tired arranged marriage through a card game and turned it on its head. I have never, ever read a book where the hero's hand is up for grabs on a bet. It worked and it worked well. I adored Victoria and her unwillingness to let her circumstances or her recalcitrant husband beat her down. In spite of her horrible parents and the knowledge she would never be anything more than a trophy wife she made the best of it. And Andrew oh how I loved Andrew. I love an Alpha hero but every once in a while I need a quiet, academically inclined handsome hero who is not emotionally constipated. Andrew was gorgeous, sweet and understanding. His resentment towards his parents colored his views of his marriage to Victoria and he realized this on his own with very little prodding. I just love a self aware hero who realizes his mistakes and sets about righting them by groveling his sexy tush off. Just about everything worked for me in this book, the authors voice, the secondary characters, the interesting glimpse into a Victorian era renovation, the sexy love scenes, the hero who works for his happily ever after and the heroine who makes him. There was not anything to dislike or quibble about in this book though I'm not sure how I feel about the heavy handed reference to Downton Abbey but it surely did not affect my enjoyment of this story. This is definitely an author to watch.Highly recommended.

I didn't want to stop reading.
By Laura Tague
Victoria Carson was born in America. Her parents wanted her to marry an English title, so they moved to England when she was eight. She was sent to Lady Grantham's finishing school to be molded into the proper wife for an English aristocrat. Victoria has always known that she will be wanted for her money only.
Andrew Hargrave, Earl of Dunnley, is the unwanted second son of two people that have hated each other since they were married. He has escaped his family by working in Italy as an archaeologist, devoting himself to finding an Etruscan tomb. The his older brother and father's heir died before he could marry his heiress, so now it is up to Andrew to save his family. Phillip Carson sets up a dummy company to fail and the Duke of Waring is the target. Andrew is forced to marry Victoria. When he figures out what her father has done the day before their wedding, he dumps her at his decrepit, dilapidated family estate and returns to Italy and his mistress.
Upon his father's death, Andrew has to return to England. Can he fix the damage he has done to his marriage?
I could not stop reading this novel. I wanted to know what happened next. This novel was so intense that you could feel what the characters were going through. Andrew's feelings of betrayal, Victoria's feelings of despair when Andrew walked out. The joy when Andrew realized that he loved Victoria and was going to fight for what he almost destroyed.
This was the first book by Amanda Weaver that I have read. If I had a real book shelf, this novel would go next to Eloisa James and Julia Quinn.
