The late Lucian Freud described "Diana and Callisto" and "Diana and Actaeon" as 'simply the most beautiful pictures in the world'. These new poems, each illustrated with full-colour details from Titian's paintings, demonstrate the quality and range of writing in Britain today, and show how Old Master paintings continue to inspire living artists.

An amazing Journey

This is an amazing journey into the heart. Many of the ideas I have heard before from other sources, but the way they are presented, and the fact that the book gives specific exercises to help you achieve the ideals presented is different and very helpful. In particular, Chapter 3 and the exercises in forgiveness have changed my life. I recommend this to anyone seeking to change their lives to live in love instead of fear.

About the Author
Jean-Jacques, Hublin, Ph.D. is the founder of the Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig (Germany). He is a leading researcher in paleoanthropology and is renowned worldwide for his work on the origin and evolution of the Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans. He extensively developed the use of virtual imaging in the study of fossil hominids and has led field operations in North Africa and Europe. Shannon P. McPherron is an archaeologist in the Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. He has published extensively on stone tool technologies and on methods of excavation and analysis in archaeology. McPherron has excavated a number of Lower and Middle Paleolithic sites in France, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Currently the authors are excavating two sites in Morocco together.

About the Author
Don Gosselin is a technical communications expert with more than 20 years of experience, including application development, technical writing, training, and curriculum development. In addition to JavaScript, he has written or contributed to textbooks on Java programming, Microsoft Visual C++, Web design technologies, Web programming languages, XHTML, PHP programming with MySQL, and ASP.NET programming with C# and SQL Server.

Diana Kokoska, a member of the Computer Information Systems program at the University of Maine at Augusta, has taught computer education at the postsecondary level for more than 20 years. She holds an MS in Business Administration from Husson College and a BS in Business Education from the University of Maine. She has taught a full range of Web design and development courses, from client-side scripting languages to server-side applications, at Washington County Community College, Eastern Maine Community College, and Husson College. She has received multiple teaching recognitions, including the national Teacher of Excellence (NISOD) award. She has been married to her husband, John, for more than 30 years, and resides in Bangor, Maine.

Robert Easterbrooks has been a software developer for nearly 20 years, with experience in C/C++, Java, PHP and more. He is currently employed as an applications and database developer for the Maine Office of Information Technology, primarily supporting the Department of Environmental Protection. He has a BS in Computer Science from Westfield State College in Westfield, MA and a BS in Computer Information Systems from the University of Maine at Augusta. Bob lives with his wife and two children on a small farm outside of Augusta, Maine.

Good Info. Not a good style.

Good information in the book. Organized in the sense that information is given in an "as needed" and "building upon" format. Also has a separately available and optional study guide. Not all current text books have that.

However, I don't like how it asks you to write the code in little sections. Write this: because this is why. Now write this, this is why. Place this right after that. Couch this within the other. Step by step. You can get lost in it.

I'd much rather see the program written out. Analyze the code. And have a step by step discussion of the code, wherein you can look at the code and even at specific line numbers or sections while reading the discussion about the code. And you can compare one program to another more easily with the programs clearly readable. Flip the page, see how this program works with that one, see how this program is changed from that one. Additionally, the programs discussed should be downloadable. True, actual typing of code is good to get into, but that can be done in exercises, not as part of the meat of the chapters. This above style I describe aids in 3 dimensional thinking.

Contrast the above clear and smooth method of presentation, with the step by step method in this book. This book makes you feel like you are drowning in mud. It is also just a way to eat up pages, without adding to the substance available in the book. Additionally, upon starting the class, there were about 4 pages of serious errata to incorporate into each Chapter, such that whole programs were incorrect if you didn't have or follow carefully the errata sheet. When I purchased the book, I didn't know about the errata sheet. So, if I purchased it online without the class, I'm not sure the purchaser, would know about the errata sheet. They might stumble upon it, it they went to the website. Might not. I don't know about this part.

I urge educational institutions and the publishing company to seriously consider asking Don Gosselin et al for a rewrite toward a smoother method of presentation. Please compare it to Tony Gaddis's Java: Early Objects book. That is the absolute best book / style for teaching programming that I have encountered so far.

Riddled with Errors

This book has 10 chapters. I have painstakenly gone through each chapter while taking the PHP class and found errors in EVERY chapter. Not just a few here and there, omissions of code that makes your code non-functional. As a student who is learning, often we as a class learned the code wrong and then had to unlearn it and relearn the right code. A good example is the pregmatch() {3,16} function which verifies that a password (for example) is at least 3 characters and not more than 16. The way it is written in the book doesn't work. What does work is {3.16} using a period instead of a comma. Backticks (`) are typed as regular apostrophes(') so the explanation of "being new to programming as a reason for the poor review" is irrelevant as every character is EXTREMELY important when programming. For every 2 hours I spent learning and writing the code to see for myself, I spent literally over 30 hours trying to figure out what was wrong with the code. To date there is a 5 page error data sheet on the Cengage website which consists MOSTLY of all the errors I've discovered along with a FEW of the errors the editor found [that's right their own editor missed a majority of these]. It should be an embarrassment to Cengage and they should immediately put out a 3rd edition. If you are a student, please share this with your professor as this will be the only way to force this book into retirement.

In the Quetico-Superior region of northeastern Minnesota, winter is long, with snow in evidence from mid-October to May. The season is fiercely challenging, but it is also majestic. Huot-Vickery (Open Spaces) has spent 15 such winters at his cabin in the wilderness, where he has observed deer and wolves. Here, he introduces readers to the geology of the area and to its succession of wildlife. The subject of winter and deep snows leads him to that of snowshoes, and so he provides full information about their history and use. There are occasional autobiographical glimpses (such as a poignant account of his mother's death), as well as lyrical descriptions of snowy landscapes, but the focus is on the grandeur and danger of nature in winter, on the season's potentially fatal beauty. In addition to offering a solid study of the ecology of the Boundary Waters region, Huot-Vickery also provides a compelling account of a quest to understand nature and self.

A poignant look at simplicity, solitude, and true wilderness

Huot-Vickery laces his personal experience with the history of Northern Minnesota and the Boundary Waters region of both Original People and Explorers. Drawn into his interaction with the environment: the harshness, the cold, the deer, the wolves, the fox, the snow, the water, the reader can imagine herself or himself walking the trails, building the fires, erecting the cabin all while reading this in the confines of our comfortable, cushy lives.
I enjoyed much of this book but would have liked to see more depth in his personal relationships as associated with the environment. Huot-Vickery relays much of his own spiritual journey, yet his writing lacks a connectedness with the women in his life of whom he writes.

Signs and Seasons

As readers of Thomas Hardy know, nature is not always nurturing. Nature is, however, always instructive, as we can glean from Hardy's contemporary, the American nature writer John Burroughs. I read WINTER SIGN because I had worked with Huot-Vickery on an earlier project (see his OPEN SPACES) and was curious about where his life was going. WINTER SIGN is a tough book because on every page it reflects a tough time in a guy's life. It is a true book, not one shaped by plot or even character but by the most powerful emotions in our lives. It is a book about winter in the land and in the soul.

It's a convention in nature writing to work around the seasons, usually spring to spring. You start with rebirth; you end with rebirth. That's an arbitrary choice: sometimes it's spring in your soul and sometimes it's winter. If you understand Hardy and Burroughs, you are ready to read WINTER SIGN.

A Thousand Letters Away is a compelling story of one soldier's observations of life with the 332nd Engineer Regiment during World War II. SGT Alan Latta wrote a letter to his wife, Helen, nearly every day, from his induction in May of 1942 until his discharge in July of 1945. His correspondence paints a rich and colorful portrait of the men in Company F. In addition, events from a unit history, Bridging to Victory, provide accurate and detailed background of their wartime experiences. This book allows a reader to follow one squad through World War II. It provides the examples of ordinary men who were propelled to heroism by the epic War. One feels the struggle, the adventure, the humor, and the sadness that accompany them through three long years. Alan Latta's poignant observations reveal great intuition for a man with limited academic education. His insights came from the education of making his own way as a child. His values were forged during the grief and heartbreak of losing his farm to the Great while maintaining hope and patriotism. This book lets the reader experience the world and the War through the eyes of young man who had never been outside of Iowa. He tells of seeing a segregated South before traveling to Scotland and Great Britain. He is amazed by the thousands of years of history and the strength of the "Brits." His adventures of experiencing Britain are complete with refreshing and often humorous examples. The 332nd landed at Utah Beach during Operation Overlord. They secured Cherbourg Harbor and served as Patton's bridging unit through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and finally Germany. He experienced the carnage that grew worse each month. During the winter of the Battle of the Bulge he described "taking shoes from the stiffs" and killing a man with a bayonet. At one point he grew so despondent he didn't know if he could come home since he could "no longer remember anybody's name." The 332nd liberated one death camp and he was stunned by the inhumanity. Later when he moved into a burned out house in Germany, he saw a doll in the rubble and could smell the dead. He wondered if we were not as inhumane as the Germans. Alan Latta returned home in July of 1945. He hitched a ride from Illinois and finally walked unannounced to his home in Lone Tree. Helen did not recognize him at first. She remembered his strong gait and now he limped noticeably from his wounds during the "Bulge." This story was shared with forty survivors at a Reunion of the 332nd Engineers in 1998. Later many of these men reported that the book told it "exactly like it was." That is not surprising since it is an eyewitness account.

A Thousand Letters Away

I believe that we all owe a special debt of gratitude to those brave young men who sacrificed so much to save the world from tyranny during World War II. A Thousand Letters Away is the story of one of those young men. This is a very personal story, but also an American story, a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today are the result of the efforts of those who came before us.

As an aside, SGT Alan Latta served in the 332nd Engineer Regiment, a group that I came to know well during my research for Ordinary Heroes: Six Stars in the Window (Ordinary Heroes: Six Stars in the Window). If you have read Ordinary Heroes and would like additional insight into the experiences of the 332nd, I would definitely recommend that you read this book.

If your life has been impacted by the "greatest generation" and/or if you like to read about WW II, this is a must read. "A Thousand Letters Away" will touch your heart like no other. And if you grew up in rural or small town America, this book will resonste with you like no other. This is Mr. Latta's first publication. I hope it is not his last.

More than the sum of its parts!

More than just a war story, more than just love letters, more than an adventure tale, this is a touching and memorable story of a young man's journey through a world he doesn't quite understand, but through his letters he's trying to make sense of it.
Highly recommended and cherished.
