In the Quetico-Superior region of northeastern Minnesota, winter is long, with snow in evidence from mid-October to May. The season is fiercely challenging, but it is also majestic. Huot-Vickery (Open Spaces) has spent 15 such winters at his cabin in the wilderness, where he has observed deer and wolves. Here, he introduces readers to the geology of the area and to its succession of wildlife. The subject of winter and deep snows leads him to that of snowshoes, and so he provides full information about their history and use. There are occasional autobiographical glimpses (such as a poignant account of his mother's death), as well as lyrical descriptions of snowy landscapes, but the focus is on the grandeur and danger of nature in winter, on the season's potentially fatal beauty. In addition to offering a solid study of the ecology of the Boundary Waters region, Huot-Vickery also provides a compelling account of a quest to understand nature and self.

A poignant look at simplicity, solitude, and true wilderness

Huot-Vickery laces his personal experience with the history of Northern Minnesota and the Boundary Waters region of both Original People and Explorers. Drawn into his interaction with the environment: the harshness, the cold, the deer, the wolves, the fox, the snow, the water, the reader can imagine herself or himself walking the trails, building the fires, erecting the cabin all while reading this in the confines of our comfortable, cushy lives.
I enjoyed much of this book but would have liked to see more depth in his personal relationships as associated with the environment. Huot-Vickery relays much of his own spiritual journey, yet his writing lacks a connectedness with the women in his life of whom he writes.

Signs and Seasons

As readers of Thomas Hardy know, nature is not always nurturing. Nature is, however, always instructive, as we can glean from Hardy's contemporary, the American nature writer John Burroughs. I read WINTER SIGN because I had worked with Huot-Vickery on an earlier project (see his OPEN SPACES) and was curious about where his life was going. WINTER SIGN is a tough book because on every page it reflects a tough time in a guy's life. It is a true book, not one shaped by plot or even character but by the most powerful emotions in our lives. It is a book about winter in the land and in the soul.
It's a convention in nature writing to work around the seasons, usually spring to spring. You start with rebirth; you end with rebirth. That's an arbitrary choice: sometimes it's spring in your soul and sometimes it's winter. If you understand Hardy and Burroughs, you are ready to read WINTER SIGN.

Hout-Vicery has packed this book full of facts about wildlife and the natural world. If you are looking for a page turner, this may not be it, since it had a rambling, meditative form, but if you want to learn more about the wild natural world of the north woods, it may be just your cup of tea.
